Chaps, I've got a 1983 S3 diesel with a rotten exhaust, which I need to replace for the MOT. I've been told the system I need depends on whether it's a 3 or 4 bolt manifold, mine is supposed to be 3 I think based on the year? Well I had a look and there look to be 4 bolts holding the manifold to the engine. I looked up the engine number and it is a 5 bearing diesel. Any advice?

Both have four bolts into the block. Earlier manifolds have a four bolt flange to the downpipe, later ones have a three. Look at your exhaust downpipe .

afaik if the downpipe goes straight down, its a 3 bolt with a loose flange and flare, 4 bolts exit into the wheel arch and are two solid flanges.

Hi there,

If a 2.5 NA manifold fits, it on the list for the scrap yard, by the end of the week, as is the entire engine :).
pm me if needed.
