Aunty has a 51 plate diesel freelander and the last few days there seems to be excessive black smoke from the exhaust. The car drives fine and turbo seems to kick in etc. Any idea what this may be?

check intercooler hoses - they tend to wear causing a hole to form and cause black smoke

black smoke is overfueling so as 2.0 hippo says, intercooler hoses would my first stop...
