i'm new in this forum and i'm new driving a land rover, using a td5 engine and don't know how to use the diff lock in my jeep and how does the ETC works.
Thanks in advance 4 a quick info and any link for me would be great.

Sorry, in spanish -my mother lang.- we use to describe a 4wd vehicule as a "jeep". Don't ask me why! Any way if u can suggest a site to visit where i can manage to understand the way the ETC works it will be very helpul for me. I have only used 1 week my je... oh, sorry, my Defender. No other coment.

I didn't think Defenders had ETC, I thought they had diff and Hi/Low transfer gear boxes?

Was it not just the other LR's that got rid of the diff lock and just had hi/low and an ETC button.

Basicly, don't use diff unless your stuck and I mean stuck. Pretty much you will just change the ratio on the transfer box when going offroad, or ripping a fence out the ground etc...

Diff should not be engaged on good surfaces, like tarmac as you will damage props and get wind up etc...

Find out what your Defender has, and I will gladly explain how to use it all.

td5 defenders 2000 (more commonly on 02 above) and beyond do have the option of TC (2nd last lamp on the right of the dash) and ABS (last lamp on the right). you either have none (like mine) or ABS only or TC and ABS.

open the hood, if you see 2 vacuum servos and a silver box next to it with 4 metal hoses with the markings FR FL RL RR, then you have an ABS vehicle. The TC is controlled by the ECU.

the TC as mentioned is controlled by the ECU using the the sensors of the ABS. the ECU monitors them and if one of the wheel is spinning faster than the other (lost of traction) it applies the brake to that wheel. Hence sometimes you wear out the brake linings if the TC keeps kicking in the worst case the brakes overheat.

the diff lock can be engaged without stepping on the clutch. you just push it to the left and after a while you see the diff lock symbol on the dash. it's used when traction could possibly be lost. what happens is that it locks the centre differential and splits power from the transfer box equally between the back and front axels.

for more information, see your owners guide. ha ha.

ok, this month's land rover monthly does have a 2 page write up abt what the diff lock does and how to use it.
