Hi there,

Hope someone can throw some light on my starting problems? I have a 51 plate TD4, auto.

In recent weeks I have found that it struggles to start when it is warm. However it also fails to start if you dont hold the ignition on long enough and then try again. It tries, it really tries but just wont start. I got towed from B&Q car park to a garage, where I was told it was both my inlone pump and in tank pump on the fuel side of it. £600 and 2 weeks later the thing wont start again!!!!

I was thinking possible camshaft sensor but as I'm not a mechanic I have left it to teh so called professionals! They appear to have ripped me off so I thought I'd come to the real experts.

Cheers folks

Andy

Hi, no warning lights and once it starts it runs fine. There is nothing untoward at all. Cant quite grasp what happening.

So it'll start fine when cold?
First port of call would be crankshaft sensor then as op says possibly injector and make sure contacts are clean on the fuel rail pressure sensor. If it does it all the time I would be more inclined to it being an injector

ok,

so the crankshaft sensor it is. i think its near the oil filler cap. is there anyway of testing it or is a buy it,fit it and see if it works thing?

Please excuse my ignorance. (but it hasnt only got two wheels, well not yet!)

Andy

Try the injector leak test first as it won't cost you anything!

BTW it's the CAMshaft sensor that can cause warm/hot start probems.

A leaking injector/s can also give more trouble when warm as diesel is thinner and passes seal easier.

This is on the MGZT - 75 site, but it's the same engine, same technique should work :)

If you want to test the cam sensor, buy a tin of freeze spray, get the engine hot so it wont start, spray the sensor and try to start it, if it goes then you have a dodgy cam sensor :) They are very easy to swap out and not horribly expensive from Rimmer Bros.

It has happened since! Then today fill the bloody thing up with Shell V plus diesel and the knacker wouldnt start.....grrrrrrr!

Need to do the checks leak back and camshaft sensor

Same symptoms as mine earlier in the year (I too even broke down outside B&Q - coincidence?). I went down the camshaft sensor testing route first, froze the thing, swapped it temporarily with a good one from a mate's Td4, none of which made the slightest difference. I then finally put it in the garage for a new injector, which is what a leak-back test proved it to be.

if it is only one injector then it would start but be very lumpy if it is you camshaft sensor then it wont start hope this helps

But its only whenit warm it wont start or when you miss with the first hit of the ignition? Any ideas? Does that change anything? Its going into Ultimate Landrover in Netherton for a diagnostic check 11th. I'm trying to find a link to show me where the sensor is, any ideas?

I had a similiar issue recently. It turned out to be that high pressure fuel pump.

at first it ran fine after it was started and the non starting was intermittent and only when warm. nothing showed up on the ecu.

do a leak of test when it won't start, if there is no fuel leaked off the injectors, then the pump is buggered.

Another test : when it won't start, spray some easy start in and crank it over. If it starts and runs it could be the pump.

Warm engine........warm, thinner fuel passes seal easier......less pressure in common rail for injection.

As above, do leak test first and go from there.
