Hi lads,got a problem with my 2005 freelander td4,engine malfunction light came on,when I tried to start car,it wouldn't start it Turns over but wouldn't start,any idea,s why light came on,cheers pat

Hi nodge,yes I have a gap Iid tool which I have for my l322,I tried plugging it in to read the faults,that's when I found out it doesn't cover that year,which I find strange I thought you could read all land rovers
with it,what's happening is when you have the car running and take key out,then try and start it with in a few second that's when light comes on and it just tries to turn over,it reminds me of when I had a p38,when you had to put a hot start bypass into becm to think the engine was cold,I don't know if the freelander has the same issue,I haven't long got the car so don't really know much about it,cheers pat

as to .. which engine faults light up the dash-light, and which exactly don't ..
i've yet to spot the list ..
what's happening is when you have the car running and take key out,then try and start it with in a few second that's when light comes on and it just tries to turn over
so .. won't start with a warm engine ? .. but starts ok when cold ?
that's often the cam. sensor at fault.
to test .. i believe ppl put the sensor in a fridge-freezer for a few min.
.. then retry a startup ..
if it then starts .. the cam. sensor at fault.
```````````````````````
another common won't start fault .. be the 'o' rings on the fuel-regulator shaft
or various other 'fuel-pressure' related failures ..
eg. lp.pump [under rear os w.arch ] .. fuel-rail sensor .. hp.pump .. injectors
The Gap IID will only read LR data which are based on the Ford data protocol.
The Freelander 1 is well before Ford took ownership, and is based on the BMW protocol, so it doesn't read it.
A generic OBD2 reader will read engine ECM codes though. ;)
hd3 is on the right lines for simple checks to do.
Hi lads,thanks for the replies,hd3 thanks for posting those PDF,s,the camsensor sounds a likely culprit,I have ordered one,I will start with that and see if that solves the problem,thanks again pat.
