Hello guys,

BLUF: After 3 years I started my defender 130 300Tdi today. I took all the relevant precautions and it started up. Until a few moments later it stopped.

Detail: I changed the engine oil and filter, air filter, cleared all fuel out and changed the filters. I haven't touched the gearbox as I don't intend to move it yet.

I turned the engine over by hand, eventually, and it moved quite well.

New fuel in and primed the filter and on to the injection pump.

New battery on and turn the key... And she started first time. Until she stopped!

First thing I noticed was the solenoid at the back of the battery compartment was ticking, maybe part of the split charge system. I was only using one battery and didn't think this would be an issue. I then realised that the engine would not rev over a certain amount, a low level and as I pressed the accelerator the engine revs would not raise but just stayed at a constant level. Eventually it chugged to a stop.

My first impression was it was staved of fuel, so I checked to see if the filter was still primed. No fuel came out so I continued to prime for some time. Still no fuel. I may not of had the cap out far enough because when I bled the system up to the fuel injector a spurt of fuel came out before I used the hand pump.

It would restart for a moment but stop as if staved of fuel. (It could of course be something else as I am at the lowest end of amateur) it did restart after a short break from fussing with it but again after less than a minute it stopped as if it had not fuel.

Is there anything that immediately springs to mind. I should mention that we have two filters. The factory fitted one and an inline filter between the lift pump and the main filter. We do not have a sedimentor fitted either.

Any help to get me back on the road would be great.

Cheers

I had similar problems. I picked up a 300tdi engine out of a barn off a bloke I found through Facebook. It hadn't been started for years.
I cracked the banjo open on the front of the injector pump and primed the fuel through on the hand pump. After a bit of playing, it would run for few seconds and then die.
I was advised that cranking on a battery wouldn't turn if fast enough to bleed the air out of the injector pipes, so I tried a squirt of easy start and it was away.
