It is easier with two. I lay with my head towards the back of the car and felt around for it to put the socket on with long extensions while my assistant turned the socket wrench. Don't make my mistake and forget to bend the tabs on the top two bolts up.

Do you want to remove the gearbox or you just want to undo the top bolts (removing oil cooler pipe)?Cheers gents....gearbox mounts tomorrow I guess
OK Number one Bast*rd bolt is free and out. Engine hanging on crane...gearbox supported on jacks. Separation between gearbox housing and engine is fine...EXCEPT at the half past one position (viewed from the front of the vehicle. There is absolutely no movement at this part. Level with the connector in pic below.
What am I missing?? Biggest fear is that there used to be a bolt from the engine side through to the gearbox but it has sheared at some point in the past....

You have removed the tiny bolt that goes through the plate on the passenger side?

It certainly looks clear. You have taken out the main bolt above it? It locates on the left hand tab as you look towards the front of the car.

When you say top bolt, I take it you mean both top bolts. The 8mm bolt looks clear in the pictureYes, top bolt is out. Will borrow 8mm Irwin tomorrow to persuade the wee bolt to surrender - I only have the basic set and 8mm is in the extension pack. Bloody typical!!
Yes, the driver's side top bolt was the one that started this thread....the top line separates ok.
Will take out the 8mm anyway...it may be that the plate is holding the engine further along and that is the source of my problem....but not holding my breath!

Just clutching at straws just in case - you have bent both of the bracket tabs up. I am sure the swinging of the gearbox would do that anyway as I forgot about them until I couldn't get the box back in and found that they were blocking it.
Looking at the picture closer it does look like it might be that bolt.

thats a 6mm bolt hence 8mm head and it certainly has to come outYes, the driver's side top bolt was the one that started this thread....the top line separates ok.

are you taking engine or box out, with the box once props and mounts are removed lowering box makes getting bolts easy except top left which can be done first before lowering box from engine bay,remove crank sensor before splitting and oil pressure switch wiring,starter inner nut is the hardest fastener imo but a long extension and uj down through the manifold helps
