Hello all, our off road 88 series hybrid's engine was chucking oil out in great quantities from rear crank seal. As the v8 is from an early P6 Auto originally. Pre. 72, I think. It has a "rope" type rear seal in the bearing housing. After stripping off sump pan and finding engine in excellent condition it seemed a shame to disturb crank and bearings. However out it came to change the seal that is made up of pump stuffing box type packing. After refitting crank and new seal crank very stiff to turn. I expected some drag from the seal untill "run in" but it feels excessive. Have any of you out there any experience of changing this type of seal? Crank turns lovely until end bearing torqued up. Thanks all.

well, maybe it just needs to run in to polish the fibre/rope type material over.

i can imagine that putting any kind of soft material inside the bearing cap would grip very hard until it beds in and compresses.

definitely one that could be answered by experience but if you're sure its right then it must be right.

whats the worst case scenario? it doesnt leak?! :)

rover wouldnt even guarentee them rope seals on a new engine on a new car done at the dealership lol- good luck :p I reckon you will get 1k max out of it without a leak lol

thing is you dont have much choice with that engine as the later seal doesnt fit so just live with a drip if it does leak a bit :)

Thanks for all your input. After engine run for 15 mins turns over by hand nicely. She's run for about 2 hrs now and no leaks, but we shall see? I know on pump shafts this type of seal designed to pass a small amount of fluid for lubrication/cooling. Never seen this type of seal on an automotive engine before.

A very old design basically, and like you say, a certain amount of leakage is expected anyway.

If its new material and fitted properly it should work fairly well to be honest :)

If it drips after a week I'm happy, but it depends in the pool size underneath, that's where the betting is! :D

I will let you all know the outcome. The whole engine clean at moment. Not a leak in sight.

Well up to now no leak. However gear oil now spewing from shaft seal in transmission brake housing. Don't know yet if a lip seal or more rope? Ho Hum.

Make sure the flame traps are clear - many older Rover v8's leaked oil because they had excess crankcase compression.
