hi I have a 2.7 diesel auto, 05, problem is when accelerating the engine system fault flashes up and the car won't find a gear? any ideas?

Thanks

Hi

Plus 1 what @Datatek has said , need it plugged into diagnostics
Thanks, it has been to 2 different garages one a landrover said it needed a new gearbox. Took it to a gearbox specialist and they said it was an engine problem .Had a new battery to as it was a bit low when checked! Feel like I'm going round in circles spending money and getting no where!

What diagnostic codes showed up?

Taking it somewhere and they dont give you what the codes said is pointless and palms you off to someone else.

Without knowing what the fault codes said, little can be achieved.

Indeed, i will try and find somewhere and get the codes written down! Thanks

Hi mate

Read about one the other week that was doing all strange things , turned out to be an ABS wheel speed sensor

Know the systems in these are very complicated

Hi i have had the car plugged in and a couple of codes that came up were,
P0405 and P140A
Also U0401
Thanks

I'll wait for Ant to correct me but those P codes seem to be EGR fault codes The U code is showing as invalid data from ECM

Do you know what reader the garage used? If not could you phone them and find out. All info helps the gurus to help you.

Addit; I am not a guru. I used my good friend Google, to search for a possible answer :rolleyes:

They seem to point to EGR system errors.....

U0401 is a generic code saying the ECM has invalid data - which is either a defective ECU (unlikely) or that it is reporting the sensors are invalid (in this case it is the EGR sensors by the looks of it).

Again, A garage that gives you codes and doesn't explain them to you or tell you what they mean is useless and perhaps shouldn't be working on your (or any other) car, as if they can't tell the owner what is potentially wrong from a diagnostics session, then they need to be kicked into touch.

@gold rover

@Saint.V8

May i ask a daft question please , would blanking the egrs cure it , or will the errors still come up therefore when errors are shown the egrs have to be replaced and then blanked

Thks

Ant will most likely have a more in depth answer than mine , but, personally I would cure it. This is what my friendly indy did, not long after I got the Golden Girl. I have seen very little difference in performance but was advised not to remove it. Others have different tales.

@Sport05 are you reading these codes yourself off something? I ask as you state in a previous post that you are using a basic reader.

Sport05
It will power up if engine is put in neutral then back in gear but it will continue to not select gear when dricing again. Not got the fault codes, have a basic reader so will have a look and see what codes that brings up

Many thks as always , I also blanked both of mine, left everything in place and just used a thin blanking plate between the engine block and egr pipes so it couldn’t be seen , noticed the tick over seemed a bit smoother

Sorry G, I misread your post. For some reason I thought you asked remove or clean. Shakes head at myself.
I had mine cleaned. I think we may even have discussed it somewhere on here . Then loaded with the different answers I toddled off to my friendly indy and he cleaned things up. So I still have mine.

U never have to apologies to me , snigger

Indeed with the new mot regs I cleaned all mine out as much as possible then refitted everything, Map sensor was also blocked , removed the butterfly plate , but in the last pic can see like it hasn’t been touched

I imagine it has an egr fault, is there lots of acrid black smoke? Also I think your gear selector linkage could do with some damn good lubrication

An even better view of the egrs , this was sent to me when a guy lifted his body off, I didn’t realise it has water also going through them
