what does the idle speed do when you select drive* or reverse* ?
(in drummer speak.. forwards or the other way)

The idle speed stays the same in drive but does sometimes drop when putting into reverse.

try a gear box oil change first off. one of the first things to do with a P38 is change the gearbox oil and filter. a lot of people overlook it and its good preventative maintenance as well as helping the gearbox along..
