Hi I've got a G reg turbo diesel 200 defender.

It's been over heating for a while but I've not used it much.

It got into the red two days ago so I stopped and left it cool.

I went to start it today and it sounds horrific and the engine is shaking.
I've attached a video of it.

I've noticed It's started leaking oil from the back end of the engine by the bulkhead.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Its also not a 200Tdi engine!

As above, if it has been overheating, it could be the HG has failed....can you feel a chuffing from the back of the head where it joins the block....I know this is a common fault on the 200Tdi engine (which yours isn't) but it is worth a look see in anycase.

well, my ears are usually pretty good, but I can't work out what that noise is, ( rest of me is a different story ). A big end would have to totally fubared to make the engine shake - so I'd suggest looking at other stuff like the HG ( as mentioned above by Mr Saint :)).... or if not that, then possibly an injector failure - it sounds like its missing quite badly to me, and this would fit with the shaking - so either injector/pump/valvetrain or perhaps a piston - but that would be pressuring the crankcase.... is there any pressure in the crankcase ?

You might hear the valve events ( or lack of ) if you listen to the exhaust at the tail pipe...

Any idea what engine it is ? I'm not all that clued up with the truck to be honest.

With me not having a top quality sound system on me puter, it sounds a little bit like a combination of tappets and injector noise.
Can you post a vid with it on tickover and then revving to about 1200?
That would give us a better idea, esecially during acceleration.

Simple quick test with engine idling crack each injector in turn and identify which cylinder goes quiet with no load ie injector cracked, do each one in turn and dont put you hands near the leaking diesel, whole test takes a minute at the most.
I reckon you need to remove the head and you wont be pleased with what you find.

First check exhaust manifold gasket, may have blown.
But could be more likely head gasket gone and its time for a strip down and a good look at all parts like valves and pistons.

That is very similar sounding to my 19j engine just before it died on me. Mine has dropped a valve. Quite unnerving hearing that noise again. Would be interested in the answer to this as I assume it is the same problem that caused the issues on my engine.

Sounds not great on my lappy either, However, the description has some worryingly similar symptoms in it to my engine. Head off mine revealed No4 injector goosed, piston face beginning to melt. Now that I'm on my way down the carped engine road, I know that the advice above for starting to check it and find out what's wrong is spot on.
