td4 engine has started to make all the wrong noises.wife was driving to work other day phoned me to tell me freelander had stoped ignition light and then the oil light had come on and had heard a ticking noise. Had dipped engine for oil that morning and oil level was correct. After vehicle had stopped asked wife to lift bonnet and dip for oil. She told me oil level was below minimum on dip stick. A passer by came to her assistance got oil and replaced oil to proper level. She started engine only to hear a ticking noise. Not good news. When i got home from work i discovered the engine block breather filter was blocked and the engine had pumped oil out through turbo. Noise seems to be coming from top end of engine. Drained oil out of sump, found no nasty bits or particles in drained oil. Removed rocker cover to see if any tappets or any loose parts in rocker gear. Nothing noticable. Has anyone experienced or shed any light on this symptom where engine has pumped oil out through turbo due to blocked breather?
Thanks JCB

Probably a tappet thats worn if lucky when my td4 suffured oil starvation every thing had gone big end 1&2 cylinder and crank 1 badly scored bore not worth the cost of rebuilding cheaper to buy used low milage engine get it checked properly before you spend. mine only sounded like a cortina with a worn cam but the engine was foooked and did you get the rocker cover off with no problems

Sounds to me that you have possibly a broken piston ring(s).. usually
a tickling sound, top end!

Draining the oil to find metal particles is good idea, but rings stay in
the piston grooves even when broken in several bits!!

A diagnostic test will show low compression on that cilinder!!
