Got in my Freelander 1 this morning , started her up as normal and drove to my destination, on getting out I left the engine idling, I noticed a strange rattling sound coming from the engine above the idling, not continuous but in bursts.

I have it booked in tomorrow for my Mechanic to have a look but wondered if anyone had a similar experience or what it could be?

Mines rattling too believe it to be that pully as mentioned above, while the belts off on mine I'm going to change the bottom crank pully too as it's showing signs of the rubber buffer going.

If any one knows a cheap place for the tensioner pully can.you let us know please

there's also a number of simpler things, depending on the engine version

on the td4 with air con, the pulley can rub on the wheel arch liner and cause a strange noise,

one of the engines has a metal heat shield on the exhaust down pipe which can cause a rattling sound

Vis system is a crap system, since the BMW redesign. You could listen to find out where the noise is coming from. It's most likely to be a loose flap valve. Once you know where the sound is coming from, you'll have a better idea of what needs changing.
