trying to report change of engine but only got 6 numbers and a letter is this correct is it possible that the head is covering some of the details or is this correct.

If the head is covering any of the characters you are not looking in the right place.
How old is the engine?
Later V8's have the eng.# stamped on the block, next to the dipstick tube, early versions have it (I believe) stamped at the back of the block.

Hi it's in a Series 2a Land Rover I believe it's came out of a classic but has the latter 3.9 heads with the outer set of bolts missing the number is by the dip stick but it looks like part of the head may be covering the start of the number.

You can find engine number check list on net rimmers and glencoyne have them see if yours match any of the fitted.. .did this on my 101 and it was bang on 24V LHD GS.. .
