I've owned my 1998 freelander from new and it's done over 200k miles and hasn't missed a beat, until now!!
Engine management light has just come on.
My question is, does anyone know of a scanner that I can plug in to read fault codes etc.
It's OBD 11 compliant according to my son and he has borrowed, up till now, three different scanners but none will communicate with the software in the beast.
Contacted the "icarsoft" agents and they say their scanners will not work on this early model (I gave them the VIN No.) Some people who sell them say they will so prospective buyers beware !!!
My motor was built in Feb 1998 and its the 2.0 litre L series diesel EXDi
I have read that early models had Hewlett Packard software which then must have been changed in later models.
Any ideas please.

FL1 2.0 litre L series diesel EXDi should be able to be read by T4 you could try ( https://www.summitgarage.co.uk/ ) ask for Nick service manager.
Give them a ring to confirm first.

A 98 L series isn't OBD2 compliant. So no cheap OBD2 reader will work.

My I930 does show an option to view the L series EDC, but it didn't when I tried it on an early L.

So your stuck with T4, or possibly a Hawkeye, but I'm not sure about the latter.

My L Series is but a baby compared to yours, its a '99 with 120k miles on the clock

There can't be to many reasons for the MIL light to raise on an L Series - the EDC doesn't get many inputs! However, you'd want to get the codes read to find out what it thinks has broke. I take mine along to the local indie LR garage and they plug their T4 in to get the codes. Only ever needed to do it for ABS faults, which doesn't talk to the EDC, but it would do if needed.

The garage doesn't charge me much to use their diag kit, so for the L Series (which hardly ever needs diags) I don't think it necessarily makes financial sense to own your own kit, but if you want to get yourself a code reader, you could have a word with these guys...

I have also talked to a great guy in Poland who does diags for the L Series, but he doesn't have a commercial product.
