hi
i'veplayed with various cars for a lot of years now but have just started on a '72 swb series III that hasn't moved for a good 5 years.

managed to get her running today for the first time clouds of white smoke then settled into a nice little rhythm the problem arose when i tried to shut the engine off again it simply wouldn't (key out of the ignition still puttering along nicely just got the charge light on) unless i deliberatly stalled it. can anybody point me in the right direction i was thinking along the lines of choke being set up wrong????
it's the 2.25 diesel by the way.
many thanks
steve

could also be the valve seals are leaking oil into the cylinders, then the cylinders burning the oil. Causing it to run on indefinately until either the oil in the valve cover drains totally in to the cylinders, or you burn up all the oil. As with the runaway engine post, how is your compression. My brothers diesel rings were never set properly and the blow by caused the crank to pressurize, causing oil to be injected into the cylinders through the head, causing a severe run on at extreme rpm's. Definately would find out the cause before you go to much further, and remember if it does start to runaway on you, fourth gear and dump the clutch with both parking brake and brakes on....

it could be the diesel petrol pump..have a look at the weird things on ebay thread there is an ebay number for one..i've no idea if it sold or not but it might help !

its diesel so theres no choke have you got a choke lever in the landy

it has a cold start lever to pull out just asumed it was a choke of sorts.
definatly diesel though the glow plugs were a give away.
oil seals could be a possibiity will look into it the landy has never been used all that much only 8000 on the clock which is definatly genuine so i'm expecting to come across a lot of leaky seals.
the compression is spot on though.
the engine isn't really over revving it just sits at a nice steady idle would it not race more if it was burning the oil?
thanks for the help so far

l'm not 100% sure on this it was a while back, but l think my series 11a Diesel had like a choke you pulled to shut the engine down.

and for those that don't know what is commonly called choke is infact a strangler valve. the choke is the narrow part of the carb venturi

every diesel engine ive ever known had a pull stop. to stop the fuel. this was until about the mid 70s? when vacuum or electric valves were used to stop fuel.
think it was mercedes who first used the ignition key operated, stop valve.

anyways, first check all breather pipes. route them away from the air intake system.
then check the oil level.
then check the stop cable/valve arrangement. could be simple as the cable stretched? needs adjusting poss?

Listen to Ormus: he knows
On the 2.25 diesel there is a knob next to the ignition key - you pull this to cut the engine (after turning the key to "off"). I have heard this referred to as a choke, so you're not alone! It's definitely not like the choke on a petrol engine though, you only use it to stop the engine.

There is a thing that looks like a choke but is actually the stop cable - you pull it out to stop the engine and when you turn the key to start the engine it should spring back in. Unless it is broken of course, or has come detatched at the injector pump end - in which case the less violent way to stop the engine is to open the lid and pull the stop lever on the injector pump - the Haynes maual or the offical LR book will show you where this is. Quite a common fault but easy and cheap to fix. And no unless you have got a gas leak in your garage in is unlikely to run away on you.

It shouldn't be possible to remove the key until you have pulled the stop lever so you may need to look at the lock mechanism too.
