Hi all, my 91 200tdi is doing about 30 miles each way at the moment daily, i must admit, i like to check the levels frequently and rejoice in not having to worry, that week, about unexplained fluid loss, i was wondering why the water in the expansion tank only ever seems tepid, temp gauge hardly rises much, heater blower keeps me warm, is it because the engine is so not struggling or thats just the way it is.

could be that yer thermostat is stuck open.
might want to think about ditching the viscous fan too - specially in this weather.

what's wrong with viscous fans?

They work constantly and so therefore prevent cooler running engines gettin warm enough when it's cold .

An electric fan only kicks in at a set temperature and then kicks back out again when it has reached the cut off temperature.

Diesels produce less heat than petrol, old answer was to fit radiator muff to reduce area exposed to flow air, but first you have to check the thermostat and establish if the problem is there.

Thanks for the useful replies guys, there isn't really a problem i was just wondering why there was so little warmth in the coolant as opposed to yer normal car type expansion bottles.
