My new vdo pump has arrived and as I need to keep the tank half full to keep driving I've thinking about how to empty it for removal. Is there an anti syphon arrangement in the filler system anywhere? I've got a 12v fuel pump that I'll probably have to step down the 3/4" hose on it.

I've seen people (on other more modern cars) defeat the anti siphon in the filler with patience and a fairly thin tube

Ask VOSA the always manage to dip a tank when after red diesel :D

I've got some 10mm nylon airline!
I remember seeing a flappy valve thing when I removed the tank to do the brake pipes 3? Years ago, just where it joins the rubber hose to the tank.

There is a flap at the bottom of the filler tube but to me it's more to stop fuel surge up the pipe when driving than to stop siphoning.

Not sure about the diesel but when I did my GEMS tank, I just added a length or pipe to the fuel feed in the engine bay, and bridged the pump relay to pump the tank out. But if the in-tank pump has failed that's not gonna work !!

Otherwise maybe a pump with good initial suction on the fumes will start the fuel going ?

That's what I thought I recalled, stop the fuel going back up the filler, just wasn't sure of my memory.

I've got a self priming pump as long as I can get a hose down the filler neck. Think I'll root about in me bits and bobs, see if I can reduce the 3/4 down to 10mm.

If it was me I would cut the access door, all the info is in the technical archive, should have been done from the factory IMO, easy enough to make the piece cut out a bit bigger and, make a rubber gasket and secure with self tappers.

The access hole for the pump is too far away to help with replacing the hose.

Cut through the rubber hose at the bottom of the filler ?? It probably needs replacing anyway ?

Join your pump up to the supply pipe at the file filter and pull it from there🤔
I can't see how that would be easy to do on a standard set up with the moulded pipework and the lump on the end connected to the fuel filter housing. However, on this occasion you are a genius!
Mine was standard until I decided to fit a facet pump on the bulkhead which meant cutting the pipe to fit it. Facet pump was a fail and only gave 100ml of fuel in 10 seconds which is way less than facet stated in their specs, whether they fibbed or the new pump is faulty, dunno, had it in stock for a spare for the 110 so no money wasted.
Cutting the pipe means I do now have a suitable open 8mm nylon pipe which is a doddle to connect my pump to. The leads from the pump will easily reach the battery on the car too.

I just syphoned mine out. Filled every can I could lay my hands on because the damn thing failed with a nearly full tank!

Diesel will run with just under half a tank with a dead pump. Is yours petrol? Had a play with the pump today, I reckon it'll fill a 20ltr drum through the 10mm lines I've fitted to it in around 2 minutes.
Still driving around in her just keeping it topped up until we have a dry mild ish day after Xmas to drop the tank.

No diesel but I had had the FIP off at the time. Only when I tried to start it afterwards did I realise the lift punp was dead. The thread is on here somewhere!
