Got an electrical issue I think
Any dashboard component used increases the temp gauge
Where are the main earth points on the defender td5 1999?
Is there anything I can check before taking it to my local garage
Thanks

Check your main earth from the battery to the transfer-box and chassis, but it's most likely to be the earth behind the dash on the bulkhead. 99% certain it's a poor earthing issue. :)

Had the same problem here.

Turn the lights on , turn up the heater fan. Temp gauge went into the red. As LandyFox says, check the earths, I took off and cleaned the engine bay one, refitted the earth behind the dash , all was good after that. Easy enough to do.

Classic issue with Land Rovers.

Cheers

If unsure, I would recommend you make a temp earth wire with a crocodile clip on one side so that you can run it from each connection to a good known earthing point free of paint and rust etc. if you have some jump leads, clean your battery connection and run one of the wires directly to the transferbox and test. :)
