I have a Series 3 1980 diesel with the need to replace the lift pump and wondered whether it would be OK to fit an electric one, since I believe some members have already done so.
I was thinking of blanking off the original pump, fitting a T to the hose leading to filter to accommodate the fuel return from the bottom of distributor pump, but what sort of pump should I fit and would I be able to bleed the system simply by allowing the new pump to run with ignition on and bleeding the filter and distributor pump in the usual way?
Is pump pressure important as long as it about 7 psi?
I have never had to deal with electric pumps so any/all advice greatly appreciated.

The cheapy ebay ones don't last, fit the facet cube type around £45 iirc, think they are 4psi, worked well on 3 diesels vehicles and a diesel space heater. Yes, turn on the ignition and bleed away!

Facet copy, think it was 12 quid?

Is it best to fit it near the fuel tank or doesn't it really matter?

It says to fit near the fuel tank but I never have, no problems. My 110 facet is fitted in the underneath compartment drivers side.
The problems I had with the cheapys may have been because I run bio, it melts the rubber bits inside, the facet has been on 5 yrs so far, cheapys lasted about 1 or 2. They have 1/8 bsp female port threads btw so you have options instead of using hose tails. EG- the 110 has 10mm nylon fuel lines so I used 10mm/ 1/8 bsp compression fittings.

Mine is near the tank, just because it was an easy place to secure it to the top of the chassis rail.
Makes it a doddle to bleed up as well.

Thanks a lot. Your replies have been most helpful.
At the moment I have the original mechanical lift pump off the vehicle...sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't... so I want to go for something that is accessible and easier to fix.
I shall probably be pestering you again later!
