I know this one has been done to death, but I've been searching the forum and there's something I'm not sure about.

I checked out the motor today to make sure I knew where everything was before removing the EGR kit. But instead of an "EGR Pipe" as shown in the workshop manual, there is a largeish metal can between the exhaust manifold and the EGR valve which is connected to the coolant bottle, can't see connections below. It looks like some kind of inter-cooler/warmer.

I can't find this item anywhere, and not sure what effect disconnecting it will have. The coolant connections make removing it a bit trickier as well.

The metal can with coolant pipes connected is the EGR cooler. Leave that where it is and take the stainless pipes of either side of it.

One stainless pipe goes to the exhaust manifold and the other to the EGR valve on the inlet manifold.
 
That's what I thought! Any idea why it's not mentioned in the manuals? As you say, just disconnect and leave in place.

That's exactly what's on mine. The manual I have however only talks about Type 1 and 2, with Type 2 having an ILT valve as well. On both versions, there is just a straight EGR pipe. No ocurrances of "EU3" in the whole book either.

That's annoying, as it makes me wonder when I'll next run up against a tiny difference...

Thanks, I'll download this and burn it. Working off a RAVE that I bought off E-Bay for £1.50. It covers Defender, Disco 2, Freelander and the P38, but it does not have that EGR cooler on it!

Will let you know.
 
Hello,

I did my de-EGR on a EU3 yesterday.
Works like a charm.
Just had to fold the pipe from the exaust to the cooler to get the top screw out (otherwise you're not straight in front of it and there is the risk of scaffing)
Also put samco hoses in. Unfortunately no more time to take the intercooler out and give it a cleaning, as there was some oil in the hoses running from the EGR towards the intercooler.
Certainly hoses from turbo to intercooler were weak/soft. This would not be good as give expantion and will loose time building the presure up. don't know if this in normal?

That's what I thought too.
But the side from intercooler to the inlet was not so soft/weak yet.
Maybe because the air is less hot that the rubber has less to cope with.
The samco hoses are better anyway. :D
