Hi all.

I'm going to be blanking my EGR ahead of a visit to Alive tuning. I am aware that the MY07s throw a wobbly when the EGR is blanked without a software fix, something Alive will be doing for me... however..

How much of a wobbly does it throw? I have heard some say it goes into limp mode, others say it is just an EML. Obviously I need to know because this will determine when and where I blank it off.

I am also wondering whether my Disco is a euro 3 or 4. How can I find out? My VIN tells me it is a 07MY but without DPF (8th char. 1) (SALLAAA137Axxxxxx). Does this at all suggest that it is a Euro 3 engine? I've heard some 07MY sneaked out the factory with Euro 3 Engines. I'm hoping mine is one of them as this would make all the above EGR stuff redundant.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

Hi

From looking at the vin range urs should be a Euro 4, but will double check for u

EURO3 the VIN ends 5A123456 (05MY) or 6A123456 (06MY), for EURO4 & onward 7A, 8A, 9A.

It can cause limp mode on euro 4 engines when there blanked , so indeed as you’ve also mentioned needs the software patch, would only take around 90 x mins to blank them and remove the butterfly plate

When u blank the egrs is best to leave the pipes in situ ref the new mot regs , put a blank between the engine block and pipes, then remove the butterfly plate out of the throttle body , put the butterfly pin back in

Get some thin blanks , can’t see them then

Also clean ur MAP sensor at the same time as it’s bound to be dirty

Hope that helps and good luck with the remap

Ps, if i may also add , please ensure ur oil pump cover has been replaced when the belts were done

Cheers. Yeah its just the "no DPF" bit thats throwing me as I thought that was introduced with the EURO4. Everything is off right now as I needed to swap out the coolant pipe connector block which was ever so slightly starting to leak. I guess I could try blanking them off tomorrow to see what happens.

All the air pipes are thick with gunk, and I mean thick. Ive cleaned half a cup full just from the "Y splitter". Is this mostly from the turbo or will an EGR blanking see the end to this mess?

Will look on the oil pump cover but might need some clarification. Thanks.

Hi

Ur very welcome and agree seems to be a bit of a dark area ref EU3-EU4

Can’t find anything as of yet

Indeed after u blank the egrs it dramatically reduces the muck , enclosed some pics of the state of mine before I blanked them

Ref the oil pump cover it’s to do with a reinforcement corner , they now have a stronger casting , u can see it in the pics I’ve put below for u

Hopefully there’s an inv that it was done when the belts were replaced

Glad it cleared some info up for u

Great, thanks for the pics. I'll check out the oil pump tomorrow. Yeh your gunk looks about on par with mine. I assume they kind of clean themselves over time? Obviously I'll get out what i can without taking anything else off the engine; ideally it would be spotless prior to the tune up.

I'm going to go ahead a blank tomorrow and take her for a run. Fingers crossed I dont limp. Not the end of the world if I have to put the pipes back until tuning day. Cheers for your help. I'll let you know how I get on after the blanking.

Ur welcome

Leave ur pipes on, MOT garage won’t know then you’ve touched the EGR, just use some thin egr blanking plates between the engine block and pipes, I did have to remove the air filter to make access easier

Same with the other side, removed the battery plastic side cover and heat shield

Also found out the difference between an EU3 - to a EU4

HPFP
Fuel lines and filter
Injectors
Fuel rails
Wiring loom
EGR Valves and coolers
Coolant pipes

Another thing I thought of, when I cleaned my throttle body up I used some silicone grease for the large O rings , really helps getting it all back together

Must admit after i blanked mine it ticked over a lot better

Always happy to help and indeed plse let us know how things go

Ok so it's been a couple of days since I blanked the EGR and absolutely no warnings or EMLs. I'm not sure if this dictates that I have the EURO3 enging on an 07MY or just got lucky. Should be able to find out for sure when I go in for a tune up.

The only negative result from all the work I've done recently is I seem to have upset the coolant level float after a full flush. I've bled all 3 valves, put in the same amount that came out and done about 1000 flawless miles so pretty convinced there are no air locks. New bottle for me at some point.

Thanks for your help.
