Nothing more than idle curiosity, but is each model Freelander fitted with a different ECU, or is it just one type, but with factory/dealer unlocked features?

As a politician would say. Very good question!!
My experience so far is that they are coded to the immobiliser module on a car specific basis.
I am assuming the vehicle types are different hardware, TD4 V6 etc.
I think the 3 and 5 door and options are mostly covered by the Ccu so that is programmed differently and also is programmed to the specific remotes, plippers.
Be good for peeps to add to this thread and list what we know.
For example, can you reprog an Ecu to suit another vehicle etc??

Which ECU are you asking about? I am guessing the body control unit?

The difference between early and late cars is significant. Pre-2000/2001, they use a multifunction unit by Lucas (I think?). This won't be programmable.

Later cars have a CAN BUS based electrical system with similarities with the contemporary Rover 75. I am not sure about features, but that is a feature of the Rover 75 - but is not something I've really investigated...
