Bizzarely the item (in a brown paper bag) has arrived despite no communication at all from him.
THEN - a day later I get three emails from poor guy in Canada who'd bought the same item from him (same photo even) but under a different ebay ID. He'd paid and nothing. Then the seller had left ebay and ebay didn't want to know...
So my spidey-senses were not wrong... he was a robbin bass

something happened and I typed an answer and it buggered off.
Aye it was an inflatable, but it was me that inflated the price and I was well imbarrased as I paid fifty quid for two wolf mirror arms... ok they were new, but I only wanted one of the boogers. Beer.
Anyway an update - the guy got struck off ebay for fraud.
He's been on several names, so if you're dealing with a Kevin Welch selling landy bits you're likely to be conned...
