OK, my SWB should be coming home this weekend and although ill have to remove the roof off, door tops off and windscreen down to get it in the garage at least it wont be 120 miles away any more.....

so, when i come to mot her in a couple of weeks can i fit lap belts and pop up to the mot station or will i have to re attach the roof etc just to use the seatbelt mounting points in the roof???

Anyone got lap belts in a soft top???

You can fit three point fixed belts with the third point attached to the bulkhead top runner behind the seats. There should be threaded holes to bolt them into.

if you leave the screen down or off then you won't have to pass the washer or wiper test bits either.

my s3 has 3 point belts, the shoulder strap is mounted to the top of the bulkhead behind the front row of seats in the fashion described by oxides.

I was told on this forum that attaching three-point belts to the top of the bulkhead was not a safe way of doing it.

If the top of the belt is attached below your shoulder height, your shoulder will be pulled downwards in case of a head-on impact. This will cause serious injury.

understanding the dynamics of a crash has probably come a long way since the seventies.

I recall the "fifth gear" off set head on impact test they did with a Volvo estate and a bmw estate, it really wouldn't have mattered what belts or restraints the driver and front passengers used.

Its a Landy, in a head on you'll end up with the steering wheel column through your neck, the engine in your lap and your arse on fire from the petrol tank...if you're worried about what happens in a crash you really need to buy a Honda CR-V!

As to what's likely to pass an MOT - my middle seat is a three point, the third point goes up and over the middle of a roll bar (a little higher than the bulkhead - for comfort more than anything) and then back to a spreader plate about half way down the bulkhead. It's an Exmoor trim job with an a switch on it so you can mount the inertia reel in any direction.

The past couple of tests I can't remember them looking at the seat belts in any detail if at all...

Very nice but remember you'll have to drill new holes in the bulkhead top rail (the existing ones are for more standard belts and are off to the side) and fit some small spreader plates to the underside.
