Hi all,

Last month, miles away form nowhere, I had to fill her up with quite a bit of engine oil. I didn't have my service kit with me so literally just topped her up. I don't really want to drain the oil in there (the majority of which is 'new') to change the main oil filter. So, can I do the rotor filter this month (assuming it doesn't need draining) and then do an oil change with main filter in a couple of moths time? Or is it best to do all at once?

Don't think you have to drain the oil to change the rotor filter. Oil does **** out of it when you take it off but should be fine!
 
to me its not worth doing one without the other even though the rotor isnt changed as often according to LR service plan, I always do both together,
 
Do you mean the centrifugal filter, under the metal cover? You can if you want replace the centrifugal filter without draining the oil.
It shouldn't spill any, as the oil drains out of the housing when the engine is not running.
I've had the cover off mine to check the filter (l could not hear it winding down when l shut off the engine) and did not spill a drop of oil.
 
Yes, taking either filter off doesn't necessitate draining all the oil, but you get a bit of residual oil in the filter casings which can spread quite a long way if you're not careful. As many garages don't change the filters every time they change the oil it shouldn't do any harm to leave them as they are until the next oil change if you're doing the latter regularly.

This situation invites the much more interesting question about where all the oil has gone in the first place. Leaked? Burned? Blown out through the breather pipe?
