Hi All,

Following on from my "Power Fold Mirrors" thread I was having a quick look late last night and noticed what looked like a wire hanging down in the passanger footwell near the heater assembly. I'm just wondering if this wire could be from the door mirror "ECU/Mirror Retraction Control Unit" and if so where is this unit located (I know it's there somewhere) Just wondering if it's easy to get at or has the centre consol got to be removed to get at it.

If it is only a wire that has come off it's going to save me £26, on Monday for a new relay which is what I thought it might be in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated guy's

Thanks

Hi

I hope you don't mind me asking but is it very difficult to fit power fold mirrors, are they also heated please etc

What parts are needed and is it very expensive to fit all the required bits

Once again apologies for jumping in on your post

Gary

No problem Gary. I think it depends on what year your car is, if it's say 1999 then I don't think the wiring is in place for the power fold mirrors but you should be able to wire it up anyway. Later models the wiring is in place you just need to get hold of the bit's below and connect it all up.

You will need the power fold mirrors (expencive) unless you can get hold of second hand ones, An ECU, a Relay, (£26 from ford) and I think a CCU (but not sure)

If you do a search for power fold mirrors there is a lot more information in there.

Hiya

Mine the 2002 TD4, will do a search and see what bits I need

Done a search for fitting powerfold mirrors and it only came up with faults not fitting them but will try different search words

Great to see the snow again, shame the suns come out as always good to go out and play

you should have heated mirrors as standard irrespective of whether they are power fold.

my 2003 td4 commercial has heated mirrors, but no powerfold.

there is no on/off switch, they are just on all the time. though it was odd, but that truly is how they are. tis a bmw thing apparently

I retro fitted power fold mirrors to my 2005 model. You need the relay, mirror switch with the fold symbol on it and power fold wing mirrors. The relay fits in it housing which it behind the glove box and attached to the door side. If memory serves me right the housing is brown. Shine a torch up there and it is easily seen. So fit switch and fit relay and when you flip the switch you will hear or if you can reach feel the relay working. In my landy the wiring from the mirrors are not there you have to make the loom yourself. It is just 2 wires each. And they went to a long grey plug on either side of the car just behind the top of the carpet. I thing the wires in the plug that you are looking for are orangey in colour. You will know when you see the plug as there is no wire coming out of the oppersite side of the plug, which then go up to the mirrors. I hope this helps. I got all the wiring info from the Haynes manual and it worked. :). Got the mirrors from eBay for about £60. The power fold mirror are more solid too when driving at speed my manual ones vibrated/wobbled/ quivered what ever the correct description is :).

Hi Freelandie,

Have you any idea of the cost of the relay which is situated on the door pillar and is it a main dealer part only.

Cheers

Hi grayo I think about 3 years ago it was about £35. Plus I think it was also a ford relay to.

Hi Mate,

Yes the little black square relay in the fuse box is a ford one at £26, the ecu/mirror retraction control unit, that fits near the passanger side door pillar is a lot more expencive and is a BMW part. I have just been lucky and got one off ebay for £30.

I don't recall having to get one of them. I only had to get the mirrors/ switch/ and relay looking thing. Is your car an earlier model?.

Strange that, I've got one on mine and I think that's what has packed up so both my mirrors have stopped working and they are only six months old so can't see it being them.

i can show you a way of wiring power fold mirrors with out the need of all the relays ect:if you need me to all you need is the powerfold mirrors some wire and a fuse and a switch on-of-on rocker with the six pins

It might come to that if I can't get the poxy thing working lol

Hi grayo I did not have to get that. Unless it was something they started to leave out as land rover started wrapping up the mk1 model.

Hi Freelandie,

Yes your right, I'm a dick head lol, I did more research on it last night and found out they changed the ecu to a relay after 2002. What I was looking at on the "A" post looks similar but is not the ecu.

I've been in touch with the guy on ebay where I bought the ecu to explaine what I have done. He seems to sell a lot of BMW stuff so hopefully he will be understanding and be able to sell me the relay instead.

I think this is the part i'm looking for but will remove mine to make sure first.

WOW that last one is a rip off. I got mine from land rover as well and paid half that. But that looks like the relay I brought so that should fit yours and sort it out hopefully. But for now if you can put your hand on the relay and flick the switch you should feel it click. That should let you know if it is working or not.

Again I don't know if this is the problem. Sometimes I can hear it click then when the switch is flicked again there is no click. To be honest I'm at a loss here I've not got a clue whats gone wrong with the mirrors, but for both mirrors to stop working together it's got to be some sort of control unit thats not working correctly.

Hi Freelandie,

This is the relay needed, right pain to get out but got there in the end.
