Hi,
Just got a used diff off eBay and it has a lot of end float 1.74mm. I checked my old one that I blew up and it hasn't got any end float. The new one is off a td5 and the old one is from a 300 tdi disco so don't know if there a different design and this is normal

any endfloat in pinion is an issue, could be a slack flange securing nut /bolt or worn bearings

What's floating? Is it the pinion shaft, or the diff mechanism itself, or both? It might be possible to replace the bearings and re-set the gears. If you're measuring float to within a hundredth of a millimetre it suggests that you're fairly workshop savvy. So it could be a possibility if the gears haven't been allowed to run like that for too long.
