If memory serves, the starter solenoid wire is a thin white wire with a red tracer.
im sure i read on a thread about things earthing through the handbrake cable if your earth strap is wrong or something like thatmaybe no help but might be worth a search

I don't think I will ever forget it - it's really hard to connect on a disco 200 tdi conversion especially when you have hands like shovels. The best advice is to connect the loom whilst the engine is out which I ignored as I did not know that the loom simply unplugs!
its a common problem ,body ,chassis ,engine /transmission need all earthing often main earth cables can look good but dont earth
