Just a quick note for anyone searching............
I had an erratic temp guage on my defender and not long after this started I had horrific diesel knock! Every time I let off the throttle the temp gauge would shoot up. I found it was a bad earth to the ECU. It may not solve everyone's issues but something to try! I ran an earth directly from the battery to the earth plug under the drivers seat and it sorted both problems out.
