Trouble is ALL you hear from the 'net is "Ive got THIS problem, HELP or ADVISE please"

What you DON'T hear is I've got a P38 & theres nowt wrong with it ..coz MOST people come here looking for advise ... if the car is running great they DON'T come here

Unless of course you're like US (Real SADDO'S) anyway & come on here to OFFER the advise that people are looking for.

Bottom line is ..there are Thousands of P38's out there but you ONLY HEAR about the BAD ones....... YES They do have a bad reputation but then again so do other cars....

Fortunatly, there are sites like this with Hundreds of members who are happy & willing to help out the guys that are having problems.....

Don't let "Horror stories" put you off ..... make yer own decision & if you need help in making that decision .... then we're STILL HERE to advise

Also you should understand that all (OK MOST!) of the problems are "Electrical" based (due to the BeCM) which can only be "Worked on" by a Dealership ( & that DOES COST MONEY) & most (if not all) post to find a way around spending huge amounts at said dealerships .................

there is far more Info on here than in the most Brilliant dealership .. if its broke someone on here has fixed it.... if its makin a "Funny noise" someone on here has heard it & found out what it is & how to cure it..................

Just look at this place as the biggest P38 dealership in the world... we'll provide the info on whats wrong ....all you gotta do is provide the Spanners to fix it !!!

Yeah thats a fair point, im with a Peugeot at the minute so they have their fair share of problems.

Cheers for the opinions :)

I think im leaning more towards the 2.5D at the minute and would get a remap

Lee. ....... Really the 2.5 is RUBBISH (as Mad Hat Man said) I've seen more pulling power in a Gay Bar!!!.. & its as welcome as a fart in a space suit!!!

4.0 or 4.6 with a DECENT LPG conversion ..... I had (Before my 4.6) a disco 4.0 with LPG .... 105 litre tank in the boot ..cost me 55 quid to fill it up & I got 275 miles ..ish (depending if I was towing the caravan or not)

Find a GOOD one & yer'll be OK .... but DO NOT go looking with "Rose Coloured Glasses" on ......what it LOOKS LIKE is totally irrelvent ... what its HISTORY IS & whats under the hood ..is VITAL!!!

Hi,
Im looking into buying a P38 in the future, not sure which one yet tho. It will either be the 2.5D or the 4.0 V8 with a LPG conversion.

Anyway, been doing a bit of research and do they really have this many problems?

Range Rover P38/4.0/4.6 Common Problems and Fixes

Thanks,
Lee

The P38 does suffer from more than it's fair share of problems, many due to poor maintenance, others due to off road abuse. The big plus is that if you are handy with a spanner and a computer, all the info is available to save yourself a fortune by DIY repairs.
I have had to replace stuff on mine, but it is nearly 10 years old and now has 97K on the clock. It has never let me down which is more than I can say for the nearly new Xtrail I had before.
The diesel is more reliable and economical than the V8 and chipped it will give a standard V8 a run for it's money.

general consensus is that the 2.5 is underpowered and crap .
what a load of bo**cks,:)i also run a v8disco on lpg which i,ve decided to sell in favour of my 2.5dse,so it cant be that slow can it,and mine is,nt even chipped.the only prob with the diesel is the initial pull off from a standing start, but once your moving and the turbo kicks in its a cracking lump, with a bit more reliability than the v8,s.if slipped liners, blown head gaskets etc tickles your fancy buy a 4.0/4.6,or if your willing to sacrifice a little performance for reliabilty buy a 2.5.

I quite agree with post on 2.5td, BMW dont make bad engines, admittedly its a heavier vehicle than BM designed it for but with a decent `box it goes. My sat-nav has recorded, down steep road to Macon and using two/three lanes and a sealed rectum, 138 mph, quick enough? It is possible to get the bore/ stroke out to three litres but the fuel pump is a saga, mine had to come from Augsberg Bosch direct as they only made six vehicles with my bore/stroke.
The key to a good DSE is the box not the engine, been in ones that were turgid and others that were grunty, auto boxes should be banned on off-road vehicles, which is why I wont be buying a new Rangy, until the manual replacements for mine come on the market, one was clocked @ 155 on Dublin ring road oo fun!

My Dad has a 1999 4.0SE which he has owned since new. It is a great car, but considering the 85k miles and FLRSH its problems have been huge!
Both front wheel bearings
Climate control Mixer failure
Heated seat failure
AFM failure
Full engine rebuild
new torque converter
Boot water leak
Door locks sticking
Loosing key fob sync
Alarm failure - reprogram required
Constant AC water leak into footwell
Rain water, water leak into passanger footwell

I love it, but wouldn't want one - went for a D2 instead
