Hi all,

Just got back from my annual German expedition with not a single hiccup (except for missus complaining about draughty door seals). Before I set off I refitted the original air filter but had to make a Heath Robinson job of it with two original air pipes and elbows from the filter to the carb as the DMTL top hat for the carb points at the nearside wing. The whole contraption resting on the engine/fan cowl.

Has anyone worked out where to get a suitable top, I may have a go at this 3d printing lark to see if I can make one?

Having the oil bath back is soooo nice, it's miles quieter, plus I stuck some closed foam to the bonnet which further quietened it. Now it's mainly road/whistle/exhaust noise instead of the angry roar from the cone-filter.

I was a bit worried it would not breath as well as the cone but there is no noticeable power loss and I don't think it's richening the mix as I got 28mpg on one 65mph-ish motorway stint and 24mpg on the 75-85mph stint and about 22mpg on the back roads....not bad for a 2.25 petrol though petrol is getting dear on the continent...

D

Some sort of miracle there - 28mpg from a petrol series! The oil bath must be full of pixie dust :clap2: I found a KN didn't make a blessed difference to performance of any kind - except it was noisier. A bigger bore exhaust did though, and an uprated head will get you to 65 more quickly.

It's got an ACR skimmed, ported, unleaded head and hi-torque CAM and the twin-choke Defender 2.5 carb (with a smaller idle jet) + roverdrive and 3.54 diffs. It will regularly do 26mpg on a long stead 50-60mph run. Averages about 20mpg when racing up and down the local hills and valleys (I've got a heavy right foot) and will happily go up hills in 4th that it used to struggle in 3rd. The mpg's are genuine too. I've got a spreadsheet going and measure brim-full to brim full and have a GPS calibrated method of measuring miles . 98 octane fuel gives a few mpg's more on long runs (about 10%). I'd just like to get the under-bonnet mess looking a bit tidier.

I don't know what's more impressive, 28mpg or getting up to 85mph!

both :D
found a 32-34 carb top in the workshop the other week. thought I'd chucked it out yonks ago
no help to dom tho, mine was a heath robinson set up in the early 90's

I'll take it as an experiment donor for a (small) fee if you like - they're daft money new! I'm half tempted to start cutting and gluing the one I've got but don't want to cock it up as its my only (working) motor at the moment.
