A friend has just bought a 1996 Tdi which was given a 2" lift and fitted with dislocation cones by its previous owner.

He was getting a strange noise from the o/s front when turning left, so we jacked it up this afternoon to see what the problem was.

It looks like the o/s front spring is catching on the bottom of the dislocation cone and making a pinging noise when it comes on or off the cone. It is the second or third coil down from the top and it is hitting the rear of the cone. The n/s has more clearance (about 3 or 4mm) but both cones are considerably nearer the coils at the rear than at the front.

The cones, springs and shocks are all Terafirma parts.

The question is what can be done to adjust the clearance?
 
:nopics: I'm assuming been front springs. They are the tube type? if they're fitted they're fitted nowt ya can do to shift em
 
To be honest though I'd bin the front cones as. you're unlikely to dislocate at the front with only a 2" lift

i thought this too bt iv had them opout...only just but there dislocated lol



as previous though no pics we cant hekp, any scuff marks to show wherw you "think" its catching? why this side and not the other, why do you think its this side>?
 
Could be fitted a bit crooked so its catching.like otherwise told get rid ive got 2 i ch lift front and back and +4 shocks and ive nevef dislocated the front. The backs dislocate very nicely
 
could it be because you haven't got crack radius arms. my front shocks don't sit in the middle of the spring since i fitted the lift. the spring does get fairly close to the shock. Just wondering if its a similar problem

What Alex said. As you lift the vehicle, the spring bed inclines forward ( reduces caster) which causes the spring to bend and the lower location point to move rearward fractionally. Either buy some cranked radius arms or some caster correction bushes. This will also improve the steering's tendancy to self center

yup, mine was catching a fair bit till I fitted the qt arms

That looks to be the problem. His shocks sit forward like that too. To the other posters, there is a definite area of scraping on the cone but there is just a tad more clearance on the n/s and that doesn't catch.
