Hi guys

We moved out into the countryside 2 1/2 years ago, anyway we'd bought a log burner as oil fired heating was costing a fortune. We got friendly with a farmer who told us about the annual log and pole sale [auction], I went to this with him and bought a couple of lot's which seemed cheap enough at the time then came the extra's. Paid a friend of his to cut it up with a chainsaw, paid his Son to bring it home with his tractor/trailer, been doing free repairs at the farm ever since [logs are stored there] so logs ended up not being so cheap.
Decided to get more self sufficient;)
Bought this [ignore plonker]

and this:

and this year did this:D

Only problem was the trailer was huge to store especially as it only got used once a year so now sold that:(
We needed more seats for the kids so I bought forward facing rears, then another set of seat belts [not fitted yet], then considered cutting windows in the back but others round here said I'd ruin the defender [I live in a farming community]
For the last few weeks I've been trying to get a smaller trailer, yes it'll mean more trips but it'll take up less room. Then it comes to me I'm trying to turn the defender into a discovery and if I'm getting a smaller trailer I may as well sell the defender and buy a discovery instead:eek:
Right I know bugger all about discovery's only that they seem to have a few issue's.
What's the simplest one to work on [can only afford to do repairs myself]
What do you get for your money [money I'll have from selling the defender]
Why do all the sunroofs leak and did they come without them?
What should I be looking out for fault wise?
What's the most basic model [ie less electrics, less to go wrong]?
Discovery will be used mostly on the road but I will be getting another trailer [probably ifor 8x5 twin axle] for the odd log trip, will occasionally have the kids in the back and be used for getting the dog's down the beach.
Advise appreciated as always
Cheers in advance
Brian.
P.S. Defenders a 97, 104k and new MOT:D

Can't help on the disco questions, I'd keep the fender :D but if you're going to get another trailer, get the mesh sides and you'll fit just as much as the bigger trailer in it ;)

Look at all that wood:jaw:

Got problems trying to make the defender work, need a dog guard to stop the mutts drooling over the seats. Then got to work out how the kids get into their forward facing rear seats the other side of the dog guard, plus they want the opening rear windows if they're gonna sit in back [defender's our only motor] and I don't want to cut holes in it.

A discovery will pull a trailer alright won't it?

A disco will pull your trailer just fine, if your doing the repaires yourself it has to be a 300(or even a 200) tdi. There nice for plodding around but not the best for long motorway trips, I do 400miles+ a week in mine. But watch for the rott!!! Spend a little extra on a good one ( you will have more than enuf with selling your defender) ps my sunroof fully works and doesn't leak. :)

nice motor - pity it doesn't suit your requirements

I love it [hence silly grin:eek:] if I had room for two I'd buy a discovery as well;), I'm the only driver and only do around 20 miles driving a week in the defender so it'd be silly having two sitting here, plus the room issue which is why I sold the big trailer:(

Thanks for the nice comment though, it is a really nice defender:D

Hi

I was advised to buy the 300tdi defender as easier to work on so I'll aim for the same set up in discovery then;) I'm not worried about age and what it say's on the number plate, I'd prefer an older one if it's a good'un';) good to hear about your sunroof, reading ads for them most have been sealed up:rolleyes:

Right guess the defenders out then:(

Thanks
Brian

You'll be very lucky indeed to find a rot free 300tdi disco unless you can get one that's had a nut and bolt rebuild with all the trouble spots replaced. Why not chop your hardtop defender in for a 110 station wagon?

The base model discoverys didn't have sunroofs. A friend has one with out sunroofs and it is pretty much rto free. I had a tdi disco before getting my tdi defender and they are so much more refined!
You'll get plenty of tdi disco from the proceeds of defender sale! You should get a mint disco for around £2000 leaving you plenty of cash in your pocket!

Get windows and seats put in your defender, even if you get it done professionally I am sure the cost will be less than the money you lose on selling your fender and buying a discovery. Better the devil you know................

Already got the seats;)

Reading about the "Three Amigo's" at the moment, quite off putting:(

Which Discovery? Depends on you. 200/300tdi if you have black fingers, TD5 for rust and air suspension fun, D3/4 if you are going to Waitrose most days (joke). However once you've sold that Defender you'll have loads of money to spend on Disco fun! I have a similar issue but with a Series 2a that I am not using that much.

That's really funny [well made me chuckle]

Does the TD5 cover the discovery 2? 200-300tdi disco 1 etc.

Cheers

cant help either of you but,
was on a scooter ride out saturday round the suffolk -sudbury to lavenham areas and saw a brown & beige county chock a block full of wood emerging from the woods...

made me wonder why you dont use the fender for log collecting as and when you need too..
