Bell housing is different, gear ratios are different other than top and there were three R380 5 speed boxes used with the V8 depending on vin.... yes it will fit.

Read that i will need to replace the primary input shaft as well as bell housing, just worried that mine will be knackered.

It doesnt drive any different, just noisey at low revs

I feel your pain, just stripping my box and lay shaft needs replacing, would you not be better with a recon box as input shalf replacement no worse than diy rebuild

im hoping i can find a r380 from a v8 first, use the disco alot so need it back on the road asap really. Hens teeth are V8 R380's.

problem with second hand is it may be no better than what you have

Correct.... and as you have already stated a recon from a trusted repairer is what is required after all it's a very important part of a vehicle and hassel free driving satisfaction.

Ashcroft will be my first call.
I talked myself out of just doing the bearings in mine as removing the box you only want to do it once.

my transfer box has a rebuild sticker on it but is ****ing out front output-so chances are I'll rebuild it.

That could be just a blocked breather. Check that and change the oil seal, which can be done with the transfer box still in the car.

Thanks guys, I'm at the stage of defender gearbox stripped out and transfer box on the deck. I will check the breathers as I'd be well ****ed off if I blew an oil seal after rebuilding it

Would it be possible to pull a 3.9L v8 and gear box out of a discovery have them rebuilt and put straight into a defender 90 ?
