Driving along yesterday and noticed blue smoke from behind and a loss of power, when arriving back to our campsite I was unable to turn the engine off as it started to over rev and you never seen so much smoke as then. It eventually cut out and when then checking dip stick no oil was left there.

Recovery got us home and advised that it sounded like the turbo had gone, local mechanic stripped it today and found that the turbo has collapsed.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Did your mechanic find anything else interesting in there?
You had a diesel runaway - it was burning it's own oil as fuel. They usually stop when they run out of 'fuel' and/or destroy themselves.
You can stop them, either stamp on the brakes and stall it in a high gear or block the air intake somehow. A co2 extinguisher down the intake will stop it as well.

Sounds like you have been lucky in some respects, hope you get it resolved cost effectively and it hasn't totally ruined your trip.

As stated above you've had a turbo runaway and this usually totally foobars the engine. It's been over revving running on its own engine oil leaving none in the sump to lube the engine.
