Hi sadly our TD5 Disco's auto box has given up the ghost 2 lights were flashing on the dashboard indicating that it's an electrical fault , it will only go into reverse now & we don't want to spend loads of money getting another gearbox but we were told it could be something else like the diff ? It's not even got 100, 000 on the clock but Our mechanic isn't an expert on 4WD 's & auto boxes so we are going to try & get it diagnosed & if it's an expensive job sell it as spares or repairs

Possible the A clutch has failed = new box drain some oil out & see if its very dark & may smell burnt !!

if it goes in reverse its the box have you tried 1st rather than D

Yes we've tried all the gears , it was a struggle to get it into Park as it was grinding
grinding in park tends to show you have a break in the drive train as box shouldnt be turning if wheels arent ,transfer box jumping out of gear is a common

no you just pull the lever back hard,
This is the small gearbox 4WD to 2 WD in front of the auto box ?
It jumped out of 2WD going up a hill one day & I thought it was the gearbox but am sure it's in 2WD at the moment ? , is it worth checking it out then in case it's playing up ?

its hi low lever ,the vehicle is 4wd all the time ,for park to grate box must be turning which it shouldnt be able to do so ,not in high or low would do that as would any other break in the drive train

Ahh right , it's my other halfs vehicle ,so i only drive her now & then mines an old Audi 80 manual but very reliable , I did warn him not to buy an auto , so if it's a break in the drive train will it right itself if try the transfer box lever ? Sorry for all the questions , I'm ok with horses but I'm no mechanic lol

there are several things that could cause a break that lever is an easy one to rule in or out, more info and trying things would be required to narrow it down for certain

Nothing wrong with autos, but if abused or not maintained can fail, drop in a box from a scrapper.

Last 4 cars autos and faults have consisted of

1 - selector switch just after purchase
2 - no problem
3 - selector switch at 11Y/O
4 - selector switch, but it plays up not fails.

But easier to change them than a clutch

Thank you so much for your excellent advice , we went up tonight pulled the Hi Lo lever back a couple of times & then I drove fine so that is all it was after our garage said it must be an electrical fault !!!

Yes it seems that we need to change our garage , it's been parked up for a fortnight after we were told it was an electrical fault & it was just the HI Low ratio lever had got stuck in neutral

i bet it was a relief, one thing you should do is get the gearbox oil changed and have it done once a year ,youd need 4.5 litres of atf dexron 2 or 3, that should see your box reach a fair age
Yes it was indeed & we wil get the gearbox oil sorted too , I'm glad I asked an expert
