im new to discoverys and the 4x4 scene. im picking up a 1996 disco 300 this weekend thats stock. i have a few plans for it lift kit , snorkal, bigger wheels and tyres maybe a roof rack im looking at bumpers too. what would you guys reccomnend first? i want to get it off road as soon as i can. any good places to buy? only looked on ebay and paddocks.

start with , make sure its all in decent running order , poly bush it , put a cam belt on it , full service , then think about what mods you want.. :D if you do a search on here ,theres pages and pages of stuff to see what people run ..

first you need to give it a good service, check all your breathers are good etc before you head into the mud,

its ready to go off road as is, just get some decent tyres you dont need lifts and snorkels before you go.

spend some time searching here there is all the info you need
 
thanks im picking it up friday evening and then straite to work saturday and get it on lift give it a good once over. give it a full service while im at it too. its got good tread on tyres but there only basics what brand tyres would you guys reccommend?

Thats another long story... if you want sumit thats going to do the do, offroad on a budget , then get insa special track ... on road they are noisey but a dam good tyre.
 
i dont mind spending good money on tyres but want to get to holymoreside next month with any luck ill ring some places tommrow thanks

what do you want to do with it? there are so many tyres for different uses and budgets
 
when/if you lift it use off road springs not heavy duty ones i made that mistake the thing will lossen your teeth and forget speed bumps they hurt
 
its going to be a everyday car but also off road prepped. im not planning on abusing it off road due to it being a every day car. i only do about 5 miles to work then same on return thats the only journey i do.
 
then go for some good all round tyres, i hear good things about bfg and kl71's,

read up about peoples experience of lifting, i did before i did my disco and most of what you read is right but I am still going to lift my 90
 
I was really happy with the Kumho kl71 I had quiet on road and very good off but as my disco isn't for every day road use I have changed to a simex copy, kumhos are for sale btw;););):D
I wouldn't use remoulds on a every day car as they would do my head in lol

It already bloody is!:D just found out they use STANDARD FACTORY LAND ROVERS with the only modifications being winch, snorkel and lights for the G4 challenge so if its good enough for them its probably good enough for you.

When you get it go and try it I think you will be pleasantly surprised how competent a machine it really is already, But I would add tyres maketh the Disco.

I once did a training day with Stuart Walker from http://www.ultraadventuredriving.com/html/main.html on one of his sites and a "half day mountain adventure" and both were completed in a tatty old £500 bog standard disco tdi, all that was changed were the front valance removed and MT tyres, I waded through water up to the bonnet and drove through mud and snow that was up to the axles and never got stuck once.

A lot of off road mods will make the machine more competent off road but will compromise its road manners eg - mud tyres, big lift etc so you have to decide whats your balance, whats good for you and how you will use it, this answer will only come in time after experience.

Mines standard apart from the BF Goodrich ATs and its more than capable of doing anything I ask it to (green lanes/tescos etc), I would possibly consider a snorkel and winch one day mainly for peace of mind, ive never "needed" either.

Dont make the easy mistake of getting excited with your new toy and ordering every bolt on bit possible so it now looks "really cool" but come MOT day its completely rotten and has to be scrapped. Like already mentioned get the truck completely shipshape first (there will be more to do than you think) and then add the goodies.

In the meantime you can improve your approach/decent angle by taking off the front valance and tow bar if you have them. And order youself some good tyres! Hope this helps buddy.:)

All this stuff about dont fit lift kits , and all the rest ,,,, its all about fitting the right mix and match of parts, springs dampers , poly bush kits. dont go out and buy all ya stuff in a package deal from lets say paddocks , research is the key , i for one and many will agree on this , that a lifted landy on decent springs and dampers , with a good poly bush kit , will handle as well if not better, than a standard disco on standard worn out bushs.. all this talk about g4 landys , come on man , they were a landrover pr stunt at the end of the day to up sales;)
 
^^^^^^^ as above. I am working my way to a heavily moded vehicle. I have lifted the body,mthe suspension, cut out all the rust and given it a new front end. I have tweaked the pump, extended the breathers and still have a huge list to go at. My advice is.....


If I had to put together a road biased off roader I would not go to town like I have.

First I would service and make sure all the body is in good MOT order. If it already has 12 months MOT I would still make sure that all the body is sorted. A good base is very important. Plus you get to know the whole vehicle.

Second I would lift the body, two inches purely to enable decent tyres to go on it. With a small lift you can fit upto 33" without issues but I would stick with Khumhos etc. I would then trim the arches and fit small extenders to keep it looking neat.

Now you have a great off roader that will impress you off road and behave itself at 80mph no problems. There isn't many places that a standard LR with descent tyres can't go. I was off roading in a box standard LR for four years and never got stuck and always had fun.,it also never cost me more than fuel. Off roading is not about thrashing around, for me it's about precision control whilst enjoying various challenges.

Once you have got some experience you will know what you want from your vehicle and you will have a great base to start from.

Saying all this I am more than happy with mine. It's an animal that is very capable but it has taken nearly 7 months work plus another 3 months planning and I am just ready to let her loose.

thanks for all comments. ill ring around tommrow see who does what. theres a breakers near me ill see what hes got too.

thanks greenhornet. its had both sills done front inner archs and rear archs done boot floor seems solid enough. crawwlled underneath it all seems solid under there. its a pretty tidy one compared to some i went to look at. if we have any left at work ill wire brush parts down that look like they need it and underseal it all saturday.
how much does a standard disco weigh?
 
I Love modding everything and ive never had a Bog Standard car its always had my mark on it. Even my landy but ive kept factory size wheels/suspension set up. you are right about having to get the combos and do things correctly Ive seen things done very well and also very ****, seen a lowered M3 once that couldnt handle for **** due to its "modding" I bet the same could be said of a badly highered vehicle.

Any car with brand new suspension components all round would almost certainly handle better than one suffering with tired old suspension components highered or not I would have thought.

All im sayin like you is make sure the Disco is in absolute tip top condition before you do any thing else to it (TBH I didnt but I wish I had)

And its a bloody good truck as it is:behindsofa: lol but GHs idea does sound good (bet it would look good too)

Dont know much about the G4 stuff TBH or the Camel Trophy stuff, I asked on here and learned a bit, I thought it was basically off road driving through really dodgy terrain for ages in really dusty places "a test of man and machines capability and endurance..." Kinda like the holy grail of off road challenges And Everyone seems to speak highly of the camel trophy and G4 prepared Landys and they seem to cost a bomb to buy as well. Were the camel ones a pr stunt aswel? As I say I know very little about it.

If I could I would love both my disco and a super modded Disco but cant afford both, my intention was to kit mine up to **** but having been out in it and done what I do Ive decided to keep it as it is for now as its fine for me.

But I dont do pay and plays........
