Hi everyone I have a 1997 Land Rover discovery 2.5 litre 300tdi and it’s making funny noises when first going into gear like a clonking noise and a whining noise when moving but not if my I put the clutch down a friend said that may be the turbo
Please help thanks

Not the turbo if depressing the clutch affects it.

Welcome.

Sounds like clutch release bearing.

Not automatic is it?

Re, clonking, could be bushings, ball joints or even slack in the drive train, does it have a Hardy Spicer or a cushdrive coupling?

Sounds like worn clutch release bearing! :)

Copy cat :p

And it’s a manual

Thought so, but always best to ask ;)

You need to be laid under it with a big F'off pry bar to lever the bushes and joints to see what play there is in them.

If they are tight then look at the drive train, this can manifest itself in the input gear in the transfer box, propshaft splines, worn UJs (there will be vibration accompanying these) and backlash in the differential.

Hope that helps.
