Hi all,

I'm looking to get a bigger car for the family and must admit I've always liked the discovery, I'm looking at spending a maximum of 15000K so should get an 06.

I just wanted to know the average maintenance costs? Any advice on purchasing would be greatly received as well.

Thanks

Stu

I can only tell you what someone in the business told me, and that is that the Discovery 3 is an awful car which will eat all of your cash...apparently they ironed out all of the problems in the Discovery 4 and it's an excellent car...personally I don't like the look of either so it won't be something I'll be considering at any time in the future...I'll stick with the old generation and enjoy driving with a manual gearstick and handbrake ;)

Eh? and a D1 with it's rust or a D2 with it's ACE and electric trickery isn't a money pit?
The first of a new design are always going to suffer issues but to call it an awful car is going a bit far! Something that will go places a standard D1 won't yet actually steers properly and is quiet and comfortable as a saloon car at speed doesn't sound awful to me...

Having said that I wonder how easy it would be to modify a D3 or 4 for extreme offroading in the way one might modify an earlier Disco

Can only speak for the Discovery II, I budget £1000 a year to keep it going and its not far away usually.

There is no doubt the disco 3 is a very good 4x4 all land rovers are (except the poofy one)
Yeh the rusty 1 and slighty over complicated 2 have problems too but imho i think its cheaper to fix them than the newer 3 if you had the money get a 3 or 4 if your on a shoe string get a solid early disco

the problem with D3 is that at some point in its life it will be stuck in LR main dealer, with all the techs stood round it scratching their heads and the workshop manager burning up the phone to Land Rover Tech Help trying to figure out why this car wont run.

It happened quite a lot to cars that were less than a year old, and some of the early ones still develop similar diabolic faults.

However.

An 06 plated car should be pretty good actually. the early ones were shocking, we had an 04 plate manual vehicle that absorbed 4k from its owner. The same goes for RRS, and same for the BMW built Vogue back in 02 and 52 plate times.

The latter half of D3 model range is not a bad option now, most of them didnt suffer the big problems.

if you do buy one though, just be aware that one day it might just turn round to you and say "i'm really sorry but i just need £2000 off you or i wont be able to run again"

I wont envy you when that day comes

cheers.

lol, well its true..... if you want a good family bus ... It will go forever and cost ya nxt to **** all to run....:)

Hi Stu, re your maintenance question the first observation I would make is that average D3 Disco compared to average large quality family car; the Disco will cost about 3x as much as the car, based on garage servicing.

The reason is that a Disco requires more servicing more often than an average modern car.

It' difficult to put a monetary value on maintenance without knowing if it'll be garage maintained or you will do the work?

My mates got a disco 3 and hes said servicing is between 250 and 400 quid (not main dealer obviously) which I can live with but 21 mpg?? Is this right? I was hoping for at least 28mpg!
