Hi we are thinking about getting an older Land Rover to pull a horse trailer so my question is would it be better to a Discovery I or II. Would need it to be automatic and maybe have 7 seats. I am trying to find out which is cheaper to maintain I know that the Discovery II has to be serviced every year or 12000 mile but I am unsure about the Discovery I? thanks

If it has to be an auto, go with Disco 2 with td5 engine. I'm telling you this as I have a 300tdi auto.

Reasons are:
- td5 auto is more powerful to a disco 1 auto. (stock vs stock or tweeked 200/300tdi vs remapped td5)
- disco 2 also has a slightly longer boot space, hence slightly more room for passenger 6 & 7
- a lot of disco 1 are becoming a rust bucket now. Hard to find one that is in good nick. If you have to go for disco 1, try to locate one of those Japanese re-import, way less rust on them.

Good luck!!

What kingsonlim said :)

just to add servicing costs will be pretty similar for both models but if it breaks disco 1 will be a cheaper fix most of the time.

If you aren't going to do big miles then you might want to consider a D2 V8. They use more fuel but are a lot cheaper to buy in the first place so depending how long you want to keep it and mileage etc, worth doing some sums.

i have had both and my disco 2 is loads better in my experiance. its been very reliable (touch wood) in the 1 1/2 years i have had it and hell of a lot nicer to drive. i do my own maintanance and its no worse than a older disco. i do dread anything major going wrong though, £££!!!! just have to keep on top of things.

either will do the job fine but ya budget my be the main constraint.Wot ya looking to pay?
