Hi all, I am currently driving around europe with some mates for 3 months, we have done 9,000 miles and the disco we are in is having an interesting problem, in 5th when cruising at 60mph the power to the wheels will go and then come back again, almost as if you where driving through treacle. We are pritty sure that the clutch isnt going, still i would appriciate any suggestions as to what you think the problem could be.

cheers all

thanks for the quick reply, its a diesel. I havnt checked the filters yet but we did bring spares with us. im just trying to get an idea of what the problems would probably be.

do you think that one of the filters would cause this?

Quite possibley, where in europe have you been driving? cheap nasty diesel could contain more muck/water than we are used to here in the uk, if you don't want to change the fuel filter (providing they are the same on tractor engines) undo the bolt on top of the filter housing and pull the glass/plastic sedimenter off the bottom, of it's particulary bad then your best changing the filter, of not clean it out and bung it back on

Take the airfilter out and look at it, I changed mine recently and when I removed the filter I had bird feathers and sand in the bottom of the box

We had an old tracked excavator on the farm I worked on and as well as fuel filters there was a small glass globe type thing in in the fuel lines near the engine and near the lift pump, periodically we had to clean this out or else she would lose power, don't know if these are fitted to LR's though

sounds very much like it's under fueling.

get a new fuel filter and replace it (fill the new one with diesel first), and clean out the sedimentor by dropping the bowl under the car on the drivers side of the chassis by the back axle. (watch out for a face full of diesel)

also, it wouldnt hurt to pull up in a service station and use the tyre air line to blow back through your air filter to give it a bit of a clean, untill you can get hold of a new one.

Hi guys, so thanks again for the speedy replies it is much appreciated. So we have replaced both the fuel and air filters today and are going to take the car for a drive tomorrow to see how it goes.

We are on the island of Crete at the moment so lots of dust accounted for a full airbox.

as for the under fueling issue, can anyone tell me the symptoms of this? (if there are any obvious ones?) and would it essentially mean a problem with the fuel pump?

oh and if you would like you can check out the blog at Making Tracks Home

Thanks again

Under fuelling generally means clogged/dirty filter sedementer, in a worst case scenario your fuel pump could be on it's way out but that is a worse case scenario

Hi everyone

so we have had a look at the sedimenter and it doesnt have a drain plug on the bottom, it looks as if the top of the bolt has been sheared off. There is a lot of what looks like diesel seepage on the outside of the sedimenter so i needs to be cleaned but because we are on crete we cant get to the mainland to a proper land rover dealership until wednesday of next week.

What i need help with guys is how to clean out the sedimenter without using the drain plug and if it is possible.

thanks in advance
