Hiya, I have a 1991 200Tdi Discovery and its now started to get a clunking noise? Its sounds like its coming from the O/S/F. The ball joints seem ok and the Drivers bearing have just been replaced. It gets worse when turning the steering wheel to the left.

It passed its MOT in January but had an advisory for suspension. Could this be anything to do with it?

Going to have a good look underneath on Sunday so any pointers or suggestions greatly received!

could be your CV in the ball joint, no real way of knowing if it is this till it goes unless you want to take it all apart, but while you have it a part its worth putting a new one beacuse of the hassle doing the job.

I did check the CV when I did the bearings and it looked fine to me. I have got a spare one somewhere in the garage so I might swap it over a see it that sorts it.

Seems to only happen when turning. Not long replaced the steering UJ but only with a 2nd hand one so I'm going to take that back off and have a good look at it.

Bit of an update! When sat in the car without the engine running if I turn the steering wheel left or right you can hear some creaking. It's making me think that the steering UJ make be shot.

New update. Steering UJ are fine!
Had the girlfriend turning the steering wheel with me led underneath the front and the creaking seems to be coming from around the bottom of the steering box. So it looks like it might be the Drop arm ball joint thats knackered!
It looks like I can get a Drop arm ball joint kit. Has anyone changed one of these before?

The steering box will creak alot without the engine running and may do so with it running a bit, If that ball joint is shot you will see lots of play in it side to side before the link arm starts to move, alos your steering will be vague when driving.
Replacement is generally for a specialist, it's easy enough to split the ball joint, but without a special tool nigh on impossible to remove the upper cone. The tool is about £90.00 so I took mine to be done which cost less than the tool.

Hi guys, me again. Next question!

Does anyone know the part number for the drop arm with ball joint? I've found a new one on ebay with the part number: STC1044 (says its suitable for Defenders and Discovery's). I'm waiting for a reply back from the seller but just wanted to ask you guys with your parts catalogues.

My chassis number is: JA021659

Have you tried removing the drop arm? Don't wan't to put a spanner in all your repair thoughts, but my 1999 one required every last ounce of my 10 tonne hydraulic puller to remove the drop arm itself.

If you have the whole correct replacement sometimes it's easier to drill & split the old one, seems destructive but if its knackered anyway.....
