I have been given a brief to design to new discovery 5. I have to give it eco aesthetics to quieten greenpeace basically.
If there is anyne that fancies answering or giving their opinions on a few questions it would be greatly appreciated!...(some of the questions have obvious answers that any land rover fan knows but it would be worth asking anyway)

1. What are the Discovery's Unique selling points?
And if there is a price overlap on the low spec range rover, why not buy that instead?

2. What is the Market of the Discovery?

3. How many people buy it for it's offraod ability? and actually use it offroad?

4. Is there a trend to the typr of people who buy Ladn Rover's?

5. Which is the flagship model?

6. What role does land rover have in the 21st century and beyond?

Thanks again to anyone taking part!

comfy but capable, happy at 80 / 90 on the motorway and at <1mph in low on rough terrain. Excellent tower of anything, space for 7 or 5 and lots of ****. Rugged, up for a hard life.
High spec disco = high spec. Low spec R/R = maybe a better name on the front depending who you are, but still low spec. I'd go with a disco over a R/R everytime, i don't particuarly like R/R's.

2. What is the Market of the Discovery?
Rich people, countryside folk, big families with money

3. How many people buy it for it's offraod ability? and actually use it offroad?
At brand new probably light off-roading - across fields to the shoot, not hard green laning or P&P sites

4. Is there a trend to the typr of people who buy Ladn Rover's?
Yes, land rover is a prestigious name and has a good following (obviously)

5. Which is the flagship model?
Defender - just look at the 60 and 50 anniversary stuff - thats the anniversary of Land Rover as a company but both celebrated with special defender models

6. What role does land rover have in the 21st century and beyond?
We still have countryside, we still go on holiday with white boxes, we still tow things over the country and we still go shooting. Farmers still farm, really rich people still want blacked out R/Rs and there are plenty of hair dressers after a gaylander.

Answers in red.

meh, beats the day job ;)

If it was a newbee with post count of 1 they would have got the finger, but, being a long term member, all be it with a low post count, i thought i'd give them the benefit of the doubt!

i'll give you a C+ for that reply - the OP gets a ungraded for being a lazy t****

1. USPs - more off road ability than any direct rivals combined with refinement and luxury. The price overlap is largely irrelevant because the Discovery is a family vehicle (as well has having seven seats) whereas the RR is not.

2. Primarily the family/adventure market, however it is now seen as an upmarket vehicle and a rival to the BMW X5, Audi Q7 etc - both of which are sold in large numbers to executives and business people.

3. I think that a proportion of Discovery buyers will purchase it because of its reputation as a good off road vehicle, but a smaller proportion will actually use its ability. It has moved further and further away from the Defender in terms of how much off road use they get.

4. Since the Land Rover brand has diversified so much now, there isn't much of a trend between buyers of the marque in general. At one end of the spectrum is the Defender (where there is a definite trend in terms of buyers and users) and at the other end is the Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Freelander 2. I would like to think that Land Rover owners in general tend to be more adventurous and more 'outdoorsy'.

Whilst the Defender is a totally classless vehicle (someone driving a Defender could "own the land or work the land"), the Discovery, Range Rover and to a certain extent the Freelander tend to be bought by middle class, well off purchasers (not least because of the relatively high list prices and exclusivity) but because of the image these cars have.

5. The flagship Discovery or the flagship Land Rover?

6. The role of the Land Rover has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Whereas thirty years ago a Land Rover was an essential piece of equipment for any farm or industry to have, it has become less and less important, being replaced by other vehicles and machines as time goes on. Although still widely used, the market for 'utility' Land Rovers (i.e. the Defender) has shrunk relatively. Hence why they are planning on a replacement in the near future. The brand has not only diversified, but in my opinion has shifted itself from this utilitarian, working image to one of luxury and executives in order to survive and grow.

Hope there's something there that you hadn't thought about... what course are you studying by the way, and where? :)

i wish you could do it for me! this is just the market research section of the project, so here i am researching the market. This is the hardest project I've ever had to do because they're asking me to design something I think is great already!
I'm doing Transport Design at Huddersfield University, So i'm a stylist rather than an engineer.

Which is the flagship Land Rover? Is it Range rover as it is more expensive and luxurious? Defender because it is iconic? or discovery as an all rounder?

Yes it gave me a lot more to think about thank you. I'll have to post my design on here when ive finished it to get everyone's opinion!

Straight away I would say the Range Rover, because as well as being iconic it is the most expensive and most luxurious. The exact model I think is the Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged V8 Autobiography, on the road at £83,995.

So you've already ruled out a 1948 series 1 in pristine condition then??

In some ways that is more iconic than anything.

Problem with discos and r/r's is that they have similarities to other modern 4x4's and aren't unique.

And thanks Sean for my c+... for 2 minutes work i think that's good going:)

I always understood the term 'flagship' to be the company's most prominent, prestigious, expensive vehicle that they produce. So for Mercedes Benz it would be the S-Class, for BMW the 7 Series etc etc. Therefore I would assume that for Land Rover it would be the Range Rover, without a doubt.

gotta agree with langers, the flagship i always believed to be the top spec model available at the time.

hmm. ok. i clearly just have a poor grasp of the English language. I am aware of this fact. Guess it has to be the R/R then, much as i dislike the things.

rr for the flagship.
If you want to design the disco 5 do wot lr did when they brought out the d4.Hardly anything, nice work if ya can get it.

Greenpeace really need to know the facts, Ignorance is the main problem.

Because of the areas of manufacture and the overal co2 released during production (shipping parts material sourcing etc) and life cycle of a vehicle, modern land rovers are more enviromnetal than Prius' etc. Its not all about MPG in the fight for environmental credentials.

well yes, but, my 1964 landie is far more 'green' than anything which is made these days, modern discos seem to last at best 20 years before rusting to bits, lets face it, the new ones have are going to have a similar life scale - so a 46 year old vehicle which is still running and vaguely original is far far greener than anything :)

A discovery should be like one of those nuclear submarines, all sorts of fancy gadgets and the ability to do a job that it probably won't ever be asked to do.
