Hello everyone, although new here I’ve been a lurker on the forums since having my Land Rover but I now find myself in an unfortunate situation where I’m in need of some advice so I can place my expectations whilst I wait for the mechanic to come out.

I have a Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 3.0 (2010)

A few days ago I pulled off on a round about and the engine started shaking and juddering and lost power. I managed to pull over and the engine continued to rattle like mad. Only when I had pulled over did it come up on the dash as Restricted Performance.

The engine turned on and continued to shake, and was worse when it was put into drive, but when pressing the accelerator, nothing. It just idled.

My brother in law had a look at it whilst I waited to be recovered home and there was nothing he could see whilst at the side of the road that was the issue. He plugged his computer in to it and the only fault code showing was to do with the turbo (I think) to do with pressure/power? There was black smoke coming from the exhaust, not in great plumes but it was certainly noticeable. At first he thought it might be the turbo as there was oil in the exhaust but when he checked the turbo there wasn’t as much oil coming from it that he would expect if it was the turbo.

From what he was able to look at in the time and the conditions he was not sure what it was but thought it might be a piston/piston ring.

When I was recovered by the AA his computer didn’t work but from what he knew about Land Rovers and the way the engine was shaking he thought it could be a piston.

The car is currently on my drive whilst I wait for the mechanic to come out on Thursday but I would be grateful if anyone could share their thoughts on what they think it could be. I’m aware that there are faults very common with the Disco 4 and so I would be grateful if this is something akin to those faults.

In the absence of definitively knowing what is wrong there is hope it can be fixed but I have to be honest, I am preparing for worst case scenario and need to brace myself for being told that it’s not viable to fix it but I am absolutely gutted - it’s a stunning car with his high spec and unusual colour and very well looked but my gut instinct is that is not going to be worth how much it’s going to cost to get it sorted if its catastrophic failure.

I would be grateful to hear your thoughts or if anyone has experienced this previously and what it turned out to be.

Thank you so much in advance.

Google LR 3.0 sdv6 crank issues.

This is my fear of what it is especially as I understand it’s a common issue on these. I spoke to Oval who said if it was the crank they can’t repair it as they stopped being able to get them from LR last year and they’ve tried others but had to take them straight out.

Have a search for MDSR
See them on fb quite a bit
