We were driving down the M5 towing a caravan going to Cornwall for a weeks holiday, when all of a sudden, a bang from the front and something falling under the car, engine dies doing 55-60mph rear wheels lockup, I quickly put in neutral and coasted to the hard shoulder.

Got it home eventually after a nightmare day with the RAC, who I will never use again, got it in the air and looked underneath for any damage, no sign of anything, there is a slight burnt smell when you take the oil filler cap off, still no idea what fell under the car.

Had a relative come and have a look who was a mechanic, he seems to think the oil pump failed and seized the engine, his advice is to sell for spares/repair!

I'm grudgingly thinking he may be right..

Google 3.0 tdv6 or 3.0 sdv6 crankshaft failure.
Big money to replace the engine, and sorry to say it may not be financially worthwhile on a 12 year old motor.

I've been doing just that, mine is the TDV6, yes it appears it's going to be a costly repair and probably not worth it, as a replacement engine may suffer the same fate...

I think if you have the facilities and can diy, then it can be fixed/engine swapped for sensible money, but as soon as you involve pros then the cost rises hugely.
