Hi All
I was wandering if anyone could possibly help me.
Please don't think this is a plea for symphony !! But i have been diagnosed with Mental Cell Lymphoma (throat cancer) and while they carried out some scans it was discovered i also had lung cancer so had to have two thirds or my right lung removed.
Please i am not looking for symphony as i am over the worst now and i am fully aware it could all return but try not to think about it to much, The reason i have told you all this is because this is why i need help with my Discovery 3 as i am really, really not well enough to carry out any work on my car.
My brother has done a lot of work on the car for me but he is nearly 70 years old and it is getting to hard for him.
The problem i have is i really need someone in the Birmingham area who could carry out some work on it for me.
I have been making enquiries my self but all the landrover people here are not very helpful the one place i contacted wanted £150. an hour to diagnose faults and then costs for repairing the fault or faults these sort of costs made me shudder what would they end up charging me and would they cure the fault ?
The fault with the car is there is a humming noise i can hear when i drive the car when it reaches about 10 miles p/h
My brother has changed the front diff for me and he changed the front short prop shaft he also changed the drivers side half shaft and drivers side wheel bearing and both front discs and pads were also changed but the noise is still there it has really baffled us we just cannot find what is causing the noise ?.
The MOT has now expired so i have had to sorn the car off road and as i have really been poorly for the last few months so can not seem to get any help ..
What i need is for someone that could recommend a trust worthy land rover mechanic who come to my address in Chelmsley Wood Birmingham and listen to the fault and at least tell me what the problem is !!
And then if they could carry out the work for me and some other silly faults that show up when my diagnostic (Evo Lynks) is connected. And then get the car MOT'ed for me .
I am sorry for this long post but needed for people to understand why i can't do this work myself and please understand i do NOT expect all this work to be done for nothing i know it will cost me but just don't want to be ripped off.
I have had the car since January and only drove it for a few weeks and we could not find where the noise is coming from luckily i still had my Discovery 2 so i put that back on the road but would love to be able to use this Disco 3 .
I know i probably don't have long left maybe 2 or 3 years if i am lucky but i now have accepted that. It would just be great to have this car running again please understand i know i have to pay and that is not a problem i just want the car fixed.
The Car is a 2007 TDV6 GS A it has 119000 on the clock it is a automatic transmission it really drives well apart from the humming noise.
Please any help would be very much appreciated just want to be able to use it again.
Thank you all Ron.

Ron more info on the hum noise needed
Wheres it coming from in relation to the drivers seat, ie your left, underneath etc?
Can you hear it outside, ie with the windows down?
Are there any vibrations?

Hi lynall
I have not took it to fast when i have drove the car as did not want to cause anymore damage but it does not vibrate at say between 10 to 40 miles p/h but may do at faster speeds.
When you are driving it sounds like the hum is at the front and to the left of the centre consul but not 100% sure
And if you have the windows open it sounds louder ?
Hope this is of some help !
Thankyou for your help Ron

Ron.

Has it always done it?
What size wheels and tyres?

Might sound a funny question but there’s an issue with a certain wheel size. Can’t remember details.
Also don’t know when it was noticeable but think 10mph might be a bit slow for this.
But hey worth a shot. It was a tech bulletin if I remember think it included the d3.

But I know a man that will @gstuart

Hi marjon
Yes it has done this since i purchased the car in January so that could be possible i think ? they are 255/55 R19 but on my disco 2 they are 255/55 R 18 .
Not sure if the rims from my disco 2 would fit on the disco 3 as i have never tried ?
The noise was there when i bought it but i assumed it was just a wheel bearing ( how naïve i am) although the drivers side front bearings was changed and all the wheels were jacked up and checked for any movement from side to side and top to bottom non had any movement not even the drivers side but he changed it any way .
Thank you Ron

Sorry marjon
Was you saying gstuart would know ? if so how can i check his old posts ?

Hi

There’s a few of us that own D3s and see if between us all we can try and narrow it down abit for u

Shame ur not closer as I would have looked at it FOC, not out of sympathy but as a fellow landy owner

Hi mate

Heard about the low profiles that can give a lot of trouble , think it was 20s , can’t find the TRO at the moment

It was 20s in the case of the L322. V8 sc

But thought I had seen 1 for the sport too can’t remember details.

Cheers , know the sport has like an extra hydraulic anti roll bar on it where the D3 doesn’t

Will also be interesting to see what make of tyres are fitted to try and rule things out without the OP having to start spending money out with some basic checks being done

Hi gstuart
Thank you for replying .
No the Auto box oil has not been changed or checked.
It did have a couple of warn tyres on the car when i bought it so i had some really good part warn tyres put on the front and then the best of my tyres put on the back and as rotating the wheels to a different positions they have been on and off a number of times when my Brother did the work he even changed the back pads for me but the noise has been there from the start and it is still there.
Thank you Ron

Its strange it’s the low speed, the L322 bulletin states 55mph ish.

A hum at such slow speed
Could it really be something as simple a tread pattern of a particular tyre;)

Ur very welcome

Sounds really daft but are the tyres all the same size plse

Alas with it being there from the beginning it’s difficult to try and pin a noise down

Has it been to a wheel alignment centre to ensure all the wheels are balanced and a 4 x wheel alignment done

It may be the gearbox but again difficult to tell

Have u posted on the D3 as there may be someone near u that could have a look for u, I’m also pretty sure D2 wheels will fit a D3 as that may also be an option as mentioned , trying to do small things without having to put ur hand in ur pocket, along with eliminating things step by step

Know a transfer box or autobox can make a drone inc the rear diff as well

Even to have all the oils checked as a starting point

Never know ref the tyre but op said he’s changed some tyres so maybe it’s something else

@Ronhayes

Is there anyway ur able to record the noise plse, then post it onto utube and copy the link here please

Only needs to be a few minutes long as it might shed some light on the noise

If u have a passenger moving the iPad around to see if the noise changes as well

Cheers

Ps, assume the belts and oil pump cover has been replaced

No belts and oil pump cover not changed was going to have that done when car is sorted did not want to pay out for that as if we did not find fault then I would have wasted my time and money.
I have probably only done about 20 to 30 miles in it since I have owned it I then had to send it off road as MOT ran out and did not think it would pass with the fault.
Then I was really poorly for about 4 months due to my conditions.
I was told by my wife and Brother that I was to forget the car as they said it was not helping me worrying about it.
But now I am a bit better sorry I mean a lot better I would love to start driving it with no issues.
I also pondered selling the car but would not get much for it with no MOT.
I think it really needs a landrover trained mechanic to look at it bit awkward though now as it has no MOT or insurance/tax

Sorry forget to mention there is no hum from engine when you rev it up the hum only happens when driving.

Hi Ron

Wondering if the best thing to do is give a shout on the D3 forum if someone is near u to help have a look for u

Sorry but can’t remember anyone in the disco section on this forum near u , know that’s.not much help

Or maybe someone knows a good independent garage that is trusted
