I went to check my autobox fluid level yesterday with a cold gearbox

I had the car on level ground and when I took the filler plug out about a litre of fluid gushed out until I got the plug back in

What am I doing wrong

Someone suggested today that oil from the transfer box could be getting into the gearbox increasing the level is that possible

Fluid level is checked with the fluid cold and the engine idling as the pump pushes the extra fluid into the rest of the box.

You now have a low oil level and need to top it back up using the correct procedure (attached).

Just spotted your post count (or lack of it). Not very polite to come onto a forum and ask for help straight off the bat, and probably why you hadn't had a reply until I came along.

If you expect to stick around and get help in future, I'd suggest heading over to the introduction section and doing just that.

I'm with Jordan TD5, go to the introduction section and also complete your profile especially with where you live.
Welcome anyway and I would suggest you purchase a Haynes Manual for the Discovery 2.

Apologies if I have somehow broken the rules of this forum I assure you it wasn't intentional.

I didn't realise that there appears to be a form of etiquette on this site and wasn't aware that you should go to the introduction area first. Unless I have missed it there doesn't appear to be any guidance for newcomers like myself on this aspect of the site or if there is it's not obvious.

Anyway many thanks for your kind help which is most appreciated

Hi...if you have the engine switched off and undo the autobox plug the oil will come out. Not sure why you wanted to check it? If the autobox is working fine and not skipping etc...just leave it alone.

i think its a good thing to check the oil and to change it regularly ,yearly imo

+1 from someone who had to replace his autobox because he never got round to checking oil level and condition
