Hi guys I have a discovery 2 that’s been kangarooing Garaged has had it 6 weeks and can’t find problem Today a friend plug it in to his scanner and we noticed it’s fluctuating from high and low range constantly Could this cause this running issue

Hi Welcome :)

Dont know (but would suspect similar) there are different engine maps for Hi/low on a p38, if it’s flicking between the 2 maybe it’s causing your issue.
so I guess first port of call would be the actual switch then the wiring to it.

Auto or manual?

J

Oh and please add the “range” to your Fred title cos it don’t really tell us much without it.

Manual
got under the car today and the switch has been unplugged
problem is the wiring to it has gone
this must have been done when the garage done the gearbox repair
it was there before

See all this info that comes out.

I would say the plug is there somewhere, but as they were messing with the gearbox it’s been trapped somewhere on the top and not dangling in view.
suggest you take it back and ask them to find it and plug it back in ;)

You are looking at the right switch I take it?
I don’t know the D2 at all so am sort of gut feeling it you really need someone who knows the disco.
@sierrafery will know.

Hi, yes cos the ECU is mixed up and it switches the fuel maps as it's a more "rich" fuelling when low is selected, the switch is on top of the transfer box and the plug must have a red/pink wire, when earth is switched to this wire the ECU goes to the low setup so maybe that wire being cut it touches earth now and then... untill you find where it is the problem unpin or cut the red/pink wire from pin 8 of C0448 then the engine will run normally like on high input...be aware that the scanner will show hi when low is selected and vice-versa as it's about earth input strenght not about the gear selection, it's a known glich nothing to do about that

Thank you so much have just done what u suggested and after 8 weeks and 800 pound bill which didn’t even fix the problem and telling me to scrap it
she is now running sweet as a nut
I’m so happy
thank you again

Pardon my usual ignorance, but could this be the dreaded P clip problem?

Don’t think so, it’s a manual, but I wait to be corrected!
It's just that @sierrafery mentioned a wire that was on top of the transfer box and that is where the P clip is, unless it isn't, on a manual, if you see what I mean.
So often on the forum there have been indecipherable problems which eventually were resolved when some one removed it and examined the worn insulation inside the outer insulation under the P clip.

Welcome but you'll still have to find that wire and connect it properly to the switch or rewire the circuit otherwise when you'll select low it will have no guts for that gearing being underfuelled
