Hi all,

Lurking low browsing the forums for a while, I just wanted your opinion on my D1 Disco and whether she's worth keeping, fixing up or letting go.

Reasons for keeping, it's awesome, mega capable, clean-ish and it's been in the family since brand new!

L reg disco with 225k miles (all motorway), lots of service history but she failed the MOT, she needs the following work:

Can do the following myself (hopefully the a-frame balljoint is easy enough)
- Rear shockers
- A-Frame Balljoint
- Headlight Fix (rubbish light and loose, easy fix)
- N/S front brakelines
- Rear bumper (can source local for £50)

The following would need a pro, and have been quoted around £400:
- Welding as follows:

  • Nearside Rear Cab or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a cab mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))
  • Offside Rear Cab or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a cab mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))

What's everyone's thoughts, this is before giving her a service that she needs, are these becoming classics yet and starting to go up in value?

She run's stops and drives without any issues at all, I guess everyone is biassed but with the mileage is it worth the time?

Thanks for your thoughts.
Chris

Just putting my 1990 200tdi Discovery back on the road after owning her from new
She has been laid up 10 years and I could have save myself a lot of grief if I had store her under cover,
So all the window rubbers had Perished and allowed water in,
But the bottom line is they are very capable vehicles and for not much money you can keep them on the road,
I personally would keep her but then I am a teeny bit biased,

Europa486 - my window rubber have also perished but not leaking as of yet.

How's yours doing? Much welding needed, I'm in kent, know anyone that could do a good job welding mine up?

I have replaced all the rubber seals, funnily enough that’s my job for tomorrow, putting All the windows back,
I replaced the rear floor and some of the front but luckily I waxed injected the chassis so she is still solid,
This is my retirement project for me so taking my time and spreading the costs, as I’ve worked in the motor trade all my life then the work is quite straight forward, just getting some bits takes time to find,
I still keep in contact with guys in the trade so will ask around for you,
If you need more information contact me direct ( start a conversation) and I will try and help,

Cheers Eurpa486 - I guess my question is really, is it worth it - how much are they worth these days, prices vary so much!

It’s worth what it’s worth:) to me it was worth keeping, I have had her from new and had a good chassis since I undersealed her from day one,
But still quite a bit of welding Floors/ Sills and A posts, annoyingly all preventable if I had covered her up with a car cover, hadn’t realised how badly all the windows rubbers had perished,
The lockdown helped in giving me the incentive to put her back on the road, so will use her sparingly until I loose my license,
At the end of the day I enjoy driving her so consider it money well spent ;)

ok £400 for the welding, plus a few bits probably change out of £1000, so were can you tell me can you get a car as good with known issues for less that £1000

Ive own mine 14 years plus now, it failed the MOT last year so scrap it of fix it, I chopped the back chassis off, welded in a new section , new brake lines, new front bumper, still going well bargin at just under £1000

I'd keep it!
As I am keeping my 1998 300tdi. In more or less the same position as mine also needs welding along at least one sill.
Love it to bits. will never get rid of it.
And yes, I think they are creeping up in value, not that we care about that!
Best of luck!:):):)
